Festive Party Drink

by Diane Henkler on 12/13/2010

I have a yummy post for you today that involves sweets and festive drinks.

Every year  I go to my friend Karen’s annual cookie exchange. I took the cookies I made for the party on two of the red floral square plates.  I like to line my cookies up in rows and having a durable square plate makes this easy.   They look  magazine photo spread worthy and so much better than when placed on a round plate.

My cookies were kind of semi-homemade – shhh! Remember, I am not a foodie.  I enjoy the presentation part of bringing cookies to the party every year, more than making them.  I bought plain shortbread cookies at Wegmans that taste like butter melting in your mouth and dipped them into melted Ghirardelli Chocolate and colorful sprinkles.  Voila! I can be part of the cookie exchange without having to spend hours rolling out dough and waiting for the oven to beep batch after batch.

At Karen’s cookie party all the guests love to exchange cookies every year, but what we love even more is Karen’s very famous Bourbon Slush.  Yum. It tastes like an orange Slurpee with a kick!    Karen made markers for her dollar store glasses by tying red, green, or gold curling ribbon on the stem of each glass in hopes that we would remember what color was ours.  This is needed, believe me - especially after having a few slushes.

Festive Drink Recipes

For anyone at the party not drinking Bourbon Slush – Karen had another table set up.  We placed the plastic cups there for non-alcoholic drinks.  Instead of writing names right on the cups with a magic marker, I made printable stick on labels. I scanned the napkin designs into my computer and designed a coordinating label.   I printed them out onto a sticker sheet that I bought at Staples.  There is a .pdf of the labels for you to download at the end of this post.

Karen didn’t need the green rectangular napkins on her tables.  I decided they would make perfect guest hand towels and placed them in her powder room for the party.

I also went to another party, ’tis the season, right?  An Open House at my friend, Debbie’s.  I knew the cups would coordinate perfectly with the color scheme in her home.   Her home was on a local garden club tour last week.  The first floor of her home was decorated for Christmas by the members of the club.  She decided to have an Open House for the neighbors the day after the tour while the decorations were still fresh and pretty.  Each room had beautiful floral arrangements, swags, and wreaths with a musical theme connecting all the rooms. I took a few pictures and will post them later.

Here is the link to the  .pdf for the printable Name Tag Stickers to download.  You can find 8 1/2″ x 11″ sticker sheets at office supply stores.

Hey, Diane! Merry Christmas, friend. I went back & caught up on some of your Christmas posts. Love your pretty purple & green mantel, so beautiful. And that glittery candlestick bowl that you made is just genius. Love it piled up with those pretty balls. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas this year. Your blog is looking better than ever!

Diane- What a great giveaway. I love Waverly fabrics and how perfect to be connected now with a paper goods manufacturer. You can sign me up for the giveaway.

My daughter is going to love that Burbon slushy idea! She always does something like that for the season. I can’t drink as it gives me a terrible headache within about 5 minutes of the first sip…and it is the same way with sharp cheeses. So…I look on and enjoy the festivities and make fun of all the people that over indulge!;>) Besides that I am crazy enough laughing WITHOUT drinking…what they do with me if I drank?

Great post! Hugs- Diana

I am a witness to the wonderful display! I attended the cookie swap as I have for the past gosh dozen years, and the Waverly/Hefty paper goods, were noticeably attractive and added a lovely flair to the evening, further complimented by Diane’s creativity with the coordinating labels and the multipurpose of putting the napkins as hand towels in the powder room….they looked perfect there.
Great night had by all as always…my mouth waters the entire day in anticipation of Karen’s Bourbon Slush – it should be tried by all! Happy Holidays!

Love the Waverly paper products. I think I’ll use the name tag stickers to make little cards to identify the food items on my Christmas dinner buffet.

Hi Toni-

What a great idea – didn’t think of using them in that way. Thanks. Did Charlotte tell you she already bought the plates to serve her Christmas dessert on.

I bought those green Waverly napkins for my best friend to use as hand towels in her bathroom. All of that line is so beautiful. Thanks, too, for the bourbon slush recipe. I’ve never tried bourbon before, but I think I’m going to try that recipe. Now I just need a party………

Hi Patricia-

I could never drink bourbon straight, but the little bit in the slush tastes mighty fine! I hope you can find a party.

Hi Laura-

I hope you can find them. Hopefully once the line is established all Walmarts will carry them. Unemployment is no fun. My hubby has been actively searching, networking, and consulting now for 20 months. I work basically so we can have affordable medical benefits. I hope 2011 brings good news on the job front for all of those out of work.
