It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like…

by Diane Henkler on 11/03/2011

I went out shopping this afternoon. I can tell you – Halloween is officially over in the retail world – no more black and orange – it has all been banished to the clearance bins. Now it is time to move right into  harvest colors and then into full blown Christmas holiday splendor.  The shelves were stocked for the holidays.  Target was just getting their holiday shop set up, but Michaels and AC Moore were holiday ready and that is what I wanted to find – holiday decorating inspiration!

I usually don’t start decorating this early, but I have a reason. My oldest daughter who is in the Peace Corps is coming home in two weeks. She will only be home for 6 weeks and is going to be traveling to go on med school interviews – so things are going to get hectic.   She has been in Africa for the past 20 months and is a bit homesick. She is looking forward to spending the holidays at home with all the trimmings. I don’t want to let her down.

I have been scanning books, magazines, and Pinterest for ideas on how I want to decorate my house for the holidays this year and thought I would share with you the images that I have found the most inspiring.   I like white with lots of color pops.   I haven’t used a red and green scheme in many years.  I want to keep things SIMPLE,  but elegantly festive.

The glow of candlelight excites me -  love these sparkly pumpkin candles for my Thanksgiving table.

Or maybe I will go for a more rustic feel.  I have collected enough acorns to do this.

The right kind of light can change the way a room feels.  Classic white string lights in glass vases is very pretty and do-able,  They create that feeling you get when you fall asleep in the glow of a Christmas tree.  Snuggly bliss.

I saw Metallics in every store I went into. They are  “IN” this year.  These ornaments would even look good on my Thanksgiving table.   I think this is my favorite  photo in this post.  XO

Melanie from Pretties and Posies has the best living room in the blogosphere.  She doesn’t blog anymore, but you can still find some of her photos on Pinterest.  I wish I could move right in. Love all the white. The stone fireplace is just dreamy.

and your ears, too for some audio inspiration.   I only heard Christmas music in one store today, but that was all I needed to inspire me to gather all my Christmas CDs together when I got home so I can start listening. It will get me in the mood to get my house looking like all these inspiration photos.   We will see how close I can get over the next few weeks.

Say it isn’t so….oh no the pressure is officially on!! I knew it would come the hour after Halloween was over and sure enough….yesterday was out and started seeing wreaths and Christmas decor going up in my town!! Gotta admit, though it is so beautiul and your inspiration above reminds of how much fun it is to decorate for this season!

I feel horrible to say that I have been looking forward to decorating for Christmas already, Diane. I don’t normally, but since we are in our new place, I was thinking about where the Christmas tree would fit back in September! Yesterday I was in Walmart and they were playing Christmas music! I have got to thin out my Christmas decorations {again} this year.

I’m beginning to get excited for Christmas decorating and music! I just have to figure out where to put up a tree in this new, weird house. Love these images, so pretty!

Such beautiful inspiration! Last Christmas, I used Pandora for holiday music for all my get togethers and I didn’t have to bother with any CDs. I don’t know if you know about it, but you go to pandora.com, type in a song or music genre that you like, and it will automatically pick songs for you. So I have a channel that plays the old classics like Bing Crosby, etc. for when my family and older folks come visit and for my annual Christmas cocktail party with friends I have a channel that plays music from newer artists. I’m having so much fun creating different channels for myself and it’s free.

So many pretty ideas. I love that fireplace! The stone is gorgeous. I am not quite ready for the Christmas holidays. I have to get through Thanksgiving. We have a huge dinner at my sister’s home so I have to think table decor for that right now.

Diane, thanks for all of the inspiration. I am usually a decorating maniac but I let Halloween go by without even carving a pumpkin. Totally a first for me. Just feeling ehhh. You have perked me up considerably. I was waiting for the couple of craft shows I am doing to get me going. I figured a bit of sparkle and glue would jump start my spirit. You gave me a lift. Thanks so much. I especially loved the pink ornies and the living room from A Country Farmhouse!

I personally love the acorns…. but mostly the Evergreen stems in clear jars. My mother after I left home, would spray stuff from the yard with hair spray?? I forget now. The clear acrylic spay is okay on anything with some color. I sprayed the clear on a towel bar dowel (try to say that 3 times fast)l I painted white, turned yellow (icky).

Now me, if I can afford to, I want all bulk nuts to place around and use in clear glass I got from Dollar Tree. And will go walking around my neighborhood for the Evergreen twigs and other stuff…. we have nothing but green still at this typing.

I am so happy for you.. you will have your baby home for the holidays!!!

Great inspiration here Diane. My wheels are turning. FYI, I used your shower door stenciling idea, and did show a snippet of it today on my post. I linked back to your blog, however, I could not for some reason link directly to the shower door post. If you could send me the link I will try again. I was able to find it and pull it up though. Thanks Diane for the inspiration.

and i thought I had a lot of Christmas cds! I contain myself with no decorations until the minute the T.giving plates are washed and dried, and then it is ON! And all I play are christmas cds until the holidays are over…at home, in the car, in my bathroom while getting ready…

Hi Elle-
You are my Christmas music kindred spirit! I smiled when I read your comment. I love Christmas music and listen to it constantly from a teeny bit before T-day till a few days after Christmas. My daughters used to give me a hard time when they were growing up, but now they understand the need to have the music on and they have their Ipods loaded up with the songs they heard growing up. It is not Christmas without the music.

Oh I like Patti’s comment about Pandora, I am going to try that.

How exciting to have your daughter back home. It is going to go by so darn fast. Thanksgiving is hardly even nodded at now a days, they were bringing out the Christmas stuff way before Halloween. It gets out earlier and earlier every year.

I am going to do the Inspired Room wreaths on cake plates, I fell in love with that look the moment I saw it. I just ordered the wreaths to make it!

I love your inspiration photos. I was nosing around the internet looking for a particular Christmas decor photo from Pretties and Posies and came across this post. I love Melanie’s home and wish she still blogged! Thanks for sharing this roundup – I’m trying to figure out what direction I want to go with Christmas decorating this year and these are lovely.
