After de-cluttering my basement and unearthing the desk I picked up on the curb, I decided to get right to it and redesign my home office which I call my Studioffice, because it acts as a little bit of both – a creative studio and a business office.
I have posted about this home office/studio a few times as it is my favorite room, but when I made the Partners desk 15 years ago it didn’t have to compete with the work table. Now the work table is where I spend most of my time. I also wanted to be able to create a better backdrop/staging area for when I take photos of my projects to post here.
Here is how the office looked yesterday. I already started to take apart the desk and then the blogger in me said – “Wait – take a photo or two.” :)
Before
I loved this desk and it has served me well for many years, but I do enjoy changing things up and when I finish redecorating this room – the space will be better designed for the way I work now.
What I disliked most about this layout and working at this desk was that my back was to the windows – bad Feng Shui!
As a fix, I placed the mirror on the wall, so it would reflect the light and I could see the window.
Center worktable – more de-cluttering going on. One of you may win some of my un-needed stuff. More on that soon.
This layout is history…. If you would like to read more about how I made the work table and designed the other parts of the room you can read the posts – My StudiOffice Part 1 and Part 2
In Transition
I took the desk apart.
Moved everything around and brought up the free curbside find desk from my basement. Kindii had to check it out.
On Sunday night, I didn’t sleep a wink. My mind was playing with all the ways I could redesign this room without it costing too much. This is the layout I worked out and it went together perfectly. Look how much more room I have now!
I am thrilled so far how it is all coming together. I am writing this post sitting at the desk with all the mess around me. What I love is that I can see both windows to my right and the French doors in my family room to my left as I work at my desk now. LOVE the light and being able to see outside! OMG!!! I cannot tell you how happy this is making me. Much better Feng Shui to the room now – flow and energy. Since my hubby’s unemployment I haven’t really done anything for myself. I did the bathroom, but that was for resale. This is for me alone – a little design indulgence. I feel energized!
None of this would be happening if I hadn’t taken control and de-cluttered my basement. This is the year I “edit” and I am sticking to it ! Now, I am on a roll and it feels great. If you have been procrastinating about tacking your clutter issues– just start with one area and get your groove going. You will be so happy that you did.
I have plans and projects for this room that I will be doing over the next few weeks and sharing with you. I am going to paint and thanks to My Colortopia, I picked out the perfect color paint and made my palette using the My Color Inspiration Tool.
The only other hint I will give you is it will be light, simple, pretty and lots of color pops.
Here are a few projects I have planned:
-Set up one side as a mini photo studio.
-Paint desk, walls, stool, and file cabinets.
-Build 2 new pieces of furniture out of a few smaller pieces and thrift store finds.
-Make a new tablecloth for my sewing machine, chair seat cover, rug, and simple treatment for the windows.
-Show you how I will hide the electrical cords from the desk. There is an outlet on the floor which helps.
…and so much more. I am super excited to get started.
I know I told you I would be posting a about a party and a giveaway. My excitement for redoing my Studioffice sidetracked me. I will post about them in a separate post early Thursday morning.
Until then-

You are truely amazing! You so inspire me with all your creativity! Thank you so much for sharing your life with us!!!
LOVE THE CHANGES!!! I am working on similar projects around here…..decluttering and reworking some spaces. Having fun and motivated to keep going.
I knew you were up to something in there. When I drove by last night the room was glowing. Looking forward to the finish.
Isn’t it fun to redo your room? I like what I’ve seen so far.
Oh, I can’t wait to see what you do. The colour scheme is gorgeous. And of course, I know you will come up with several fabulous ideas and projects.
where is the white desk with the filing folders from? I need something like that.

It’s already looking great! Love the layout, and LOVE that desk! Good for you for doing a little something for yourself!
I do love a good switcheroo. I did that in my sewing room awhile back and it was like WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THIS SOONER?! Nice work. :)
You are busy, send me some energy!
Debbie
Wow, it does look bigger that way, Diane! Love this new set up! I know I would be happier being able to look out the windows, too.
Thanks Kathy – I just bought some paint this afternoon to start the next step. Painting the window trim.
Looks like you got your hands full!! I showed this post to everyone in my family because your Kindii TOTALLY caught my eye! We all agree that this has got to be the tallest cat we have ever seen! At first, I thought Kindii was a dog, but my son noticed the kitty paws. Please share with me what kind of cat this is…
Hi Lesley -
Kindii is a dog. My daughter brought her home at Thanksgiving from Africa to live with mom and dad while she finishes her time in the Peace Corps. Kindii is about a year old and is a sweetie. She is fully grown. She is about 95% Basenji. White paws are one of the characteristics. Her coloring is called Brindle. She looks like a tiger and runs like one, too – sleek and fast. She and the cat, Trax that you have come to know from my blog is the cat above mentioned daughter brought home with her when she graduated from college.
Diane, I’m looking forward to this makeover. You had me at mini photo studio!!! Love your color scheme!
Hi Lisa -
I seriously need to have a nicely lit spot to take step by step photos easily. I am always looking for the perfect light and if it is a rainy day shooting by the windows doesn’t work. I have been reading up on what I need to do and will begin experimenting until I get it right.I will keep you posted.
Diane,
I’m am dying to find out how you’re going to hide those cords!!!!
I work from home full-time and have a desk similar to the one that you just moved from the basement. I would love to place the desk in the middle of the room (with my back against the wall), but all of the hanging cords from my laptop and monitor (I need to have both monitors going at the same time), plus the phone cords, wireless internet cords, etc., etc. It’s an awful, jumbled mess.
Cords are one of my biggest pet peeves and I’ve yet to find a pretty, organized way to hide this eyesore. I think you just might be the one who can give me some ideas on how to fix this problem!!!
I’m very, very much looking forward to that post!

Oh Diane! So excited to see how it all turns out. I’m sure it will be fabulous! Love the colors. Happy colors for a happy room.
I already know this is going to be an amazing and inspiring transformation. It’s like an “In My Own Style” mini-series……how fun!!!
PS-If rose furniture appliques fits into your plans I would honored to make something special for your new Studioffice:)
Hi, Diane
I am loving the desk with those lovely curvy legs! I can’t wait to see the end results. Have a great week.
Vanessa
Wow Diane!
You always top yourself every time you ‘do’ a project. I am still stuck on the declutter thingy. I am truly going to take you at your word about being energized after completing the first go round. My guest room is unuseable for about a year now and it is progressing from bad to worse. I have extra pots, pans, blankets, comforters and you name it piled on that bed… UGH. Procrastination has gone from my middle name to my first name now. Of course, the broken right wrist took over 3 months to be able to slightly use again, then I cut my right eye with this junk mail post card thingy, then I got a bad sinus infection…… ENOUGH.
I am ready to start on that scary room now.
I like how it’s coming along, the new desk instantly makes the room look twice as big. Thanks for the link to colortopia, looks like fun, can’t wait to play!
Diane,
I love that desk and the new arrangement….can’t wait to see what’s next.
I can’t wait to see what you are going to do. I am getting ready to redo my craft room. I finally got my husband to take his things elsewhere so it will be mine and mine alone. I have never had a room all to myself and can’t wait!
I am in love with your new/old desk! What a beautiful place to sit and create.
Hi Nancy -
It is amazing how much a change like this can do for ones psych. :)
Wow! I’m loving it, too, Diane! So open and airy and I’ll just bet that it feeds your creative spirit! Still swooning over that table! Now I’m taking a second look at my studio and feeling a change coming on….. :) Thanks for the inspiration!
xoxo laurie
You are so amazing.Beautiful collection of home decor.I know you will come up with several fabulous ideas and projects.
I just found you looking for home office inspiration on google images. The first picture was like a what not to do, but my desk also looks like that so I had to look. You are my new hero….. You have so many wonderful pieces, I can’t wait to see how you make all of this work. I have the same situation in a 10 x 10 room, plus throw in a treadmill… I have been had my computer in a corner with my back to the world for so long, I love the idea of the open desk! Thanks for the inspiration.
Hi Debra – I am loving the open feeling and wishing I had done it sooner. Now that it has been a few months since I changed it – it is such a happier space now. I think there is truth in the Feng Shui philosophy!
