A New Color Tool To Play With

by Diane Henkler on 01/04/2013

As most of you know I write for My Colortopia. They recently launched a brand new color tool on the site that is FUN, FUN, FUN to use. It is called – Color My Room.  It takes the guesswork out of picking a paint color for any room in your home by letting you see how the color will actually look in the room.

Not only is it fun, but fast and easy to use, too. It is my favorite tool on the site.

You will find the Color My Room tool under the Color Tools category.

The first step is to choose your colors. You can choose one of mine that are on the Get Your Colors page or one that my fellow My Colortopia bloggers have chosen. You can also use a color that you saved in your Project Folder on the site.   Once that is done, you can upload a photo of your room.  If you don’t have a photo of a room, there are many choose from on the site.

I uploaded a photo of my family room.  Once your photo is uploaded, simply click on the “areas to paint” button and bring your mouse pointer to your photo and start clicking dots around the walls you want to paint.  You just need to click – when I first started, I was trying to click and drag the mouse, but that does not work. Just click dots around the edges of the area you want to paint – EASY!

Once you are around one wall section – click on the first dot again and it will make the dotted lines solid and you will be able to go to the next step. Do each section separately.

Once you have all the areas picked out – the fun begins.  Click- “Next” to paint it.

A little paint brush will appear. Just place it over each of the walls and click – like magic – the paint color will appear.  How about Barley Jade?

With another swish of the paint brush you can see how one of the coordinating colors in the palette is going to look.  Pretty amazing, right?

Prest0-Change0 – Shaded Ice – looks nice.

Teal Lake – anyone?

I had so much fun with the Color My Room tool, that I decided to see how it would work on furniture.  I uploaded a photo of my studioffice.  I wanted to see how my crafts supply armoire would look painted another color. Now that all the other elements are white in the room, I want to add a color focus.  I can try out many colors until I find one I like.     I told you it was fun.

How to choose furniture colors

To try out your own colors – first add them to your Project File on the site.   You can access it on the upper right hand side of the My Colortopia site.  There are directions on the site on how to do this.

I have been sponsored by Glidden to write this post. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

This is great! I still get teased about the time I hired painters to paint our two story foyer and then three days later had them paint it another color because I didn’t like it. Thanks. I will have fun with this!

Hi Debbie – I remember that well :) Wish I could find a painter again that charged what he did. He is long retired.

These are great online tools to get an idea of how things will look changed up. I’ve been using Sherwin Williams online paint tool for quite some time. I’ll have to give this one a try too!

These tools are great, I am a painter and decorator and find these sort of tools very useful for indecisive customers. After all, who wants to have to paint everything twice!!

Did you find the colors true to color of the paint?
Sherwin Williams had something like this and I found 3 colors I really liked but when I got the real paint it was about 3-4 times darker than the pallet on the website.

Hi Carla – I have used it to pick out 2 colors of paint so far. Both were lighter colors and when I got them home they were what I was expecting. Paint is very hard to pick on a computer – it does take some of the guess work out, but the colors on a computer screen can make the colors look different. I would pick the color using online color tools, but still get an actual paint chip or a sample pot at the paint store to try on the walls to see how it looks before you buy.
