My Kitchen Loves Beautiful

Yeah!!! It is the weekend. It is going to be cold and rainy here in PA.   If you are like me – you are thinking Spring – and want it to hurry on up and get here already – enough of Winter and the cold.  To get you or at least your senses ready for Spring, I wanted to share with you what I do with my dish soap.  You are probably saying – What?  Diane writes about affordable DIY stylish décor. Dish Soap?  Spring?

Yep – dish soap!

Back in 1986 I read a book that changed my life.  The book was Living A Beautiful Life – 500 Ways to Add Elegance, Order, Beauty and Joy to Every Day of Your Life by Alexandra Stoddard.  If you have never read it – it is a classic!  I have three copies.  One of the things she discusses in the book, is to make the mundane in your life – beautiful.

Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Like your dish soap.   You need to use it a few times a day and want it handy, but the bottle it comes in does nothing to make your life or your kitchen counter more beautiful.

Live a beautiful life and recycle a pretty bottle and make it into a decorative dish soap bottle.  I transfer the detergent from the plastic bottle I buy at the supermarket into my pretty bottle.  It provides a pop of color to the kitchen counter along with some happiness producing color therapy every time I pass it.  Live a beautiful life in every way you can! That is what I have been doing since I read Alexandra’s book.

Living a Beautiful Life: 500 Ways to Add Elegance, Order, Beauty and Joy to Every Day of Your Life

Back in August, you may remember that I posted about moving my oldest daughter into an apartment.  She is into green living and wants to create as little waste as possible.  When we were shopping for some furnishings for her at Target, she introduced me to the refill bags of dish soap made by Method.  So smart – less waste.  We bought a bag along with a bottle pouring spout.  I searched the recycling bins behind her apartment and found an empty olive oil bottle.  I cleaned it out to make a pretty dish soap bottle for her kitchen, similar to the one she had grown up using.   She wants to live a beautiful life, too.

No need to make your own pretty bottle anymore. This spring, Method is doing it for you. They are partnering with Irish fashion designer Orla Kiely and are offering a limited edition collection of 4 pretty patterns on their bottles.   Not only are their dish soaps available in pretty bottles, but their hand wash and all-purpose cleaner is too – in a range of delightfully fresh scents – tomato vine, white nectarine, honeysuckle, and cloudburst.

I love the fresh sunshine-y smell of  Tomato Vine the best.  The smell is so fresh that my mind immediately goes to the garden and picking tomatoes with the warm sun on my shoulders.   Hmmmm! and Ahhhhh!

It’s Method’s most charming collection yet,  and is available at Target stores and on

Thank you so much for offering this giveaway. I’ve used Method for many years now, my family has very sensitive skin and washing our hands all the time with the more popular hand soaps out there, just ate the skin off our hands (very annoying and not pretty). I’m so happy Method caught on as much as it did, because I really do think they have an awesome product line….I’m also a big believer in pretty soap bottles, even for laundry soap :D

I like the pretty bottles over the soap containers too. I have done this for so many years…. well let’s just say a long time (grin). I have even used the small wine bottles that come four in a pack. I also used to save miniature booze bottles from plane trips and I use them for nutmeg, cinnamon. I have given the small wine ones away filled with salt in one and pepper in the other with the appropriate holes.

Sounds like a really great give away too.

Picked up some of the Honeysuckle the other day. Wouldn’t that be a great scent for the laundry detergent?

My high school boyfriend gave me that book in 1994, I believe :) Ah…what memories!
    I love Method products.

Diane, I love Alexandra Stoddard’s books, too! I have several of her’s & have read them several times. I wholeheartedly agree that we should live a beautiful life in every way. Beauty is so personal & exciting for each of us – flowers, artwork, photographs, stationary, soap dishes, etc.

I have kept dishsoap on my counter in a bottle for years and years. One thing I’d recommend is find a bottle with a loop or handle on it. Much less chance of it slipping and dropping out of wet, soapy hands if it has a loop!

I love Orla’s style. I came back from Ireland with a tote and a wallet. I read your husband is USNA ’83. Were you there for the Notre Dame game too?
