I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. It was beautiful here in PA. Absolutely gorgeous and I wanted to be outside as much as possible to enjoy the weather, so I didn’t get around to any work or blogging. Now that Labor Day has officially come and gone and the Summer of 2010 is officially over, I can get into full fall mode YEAH!!!!!!! without anyone giving me a hard time, like I am trying to rush the season. I am looking forward to oranges, brown, reds and all the lovely warm fall colors and putting some fall touches throughout the house. The project I created for today’s post is for beyond Fall —– It is a Christmas project that takes some time to make so I wanted to post it now to give you ample time to gather all the materials and create your own.

I also wanted to remind you that if and when you complete your holiday projects you can link them here, at my On-Going Holiday Link- up Party. There is also a button and a link over there on my sidebar. You can link old an new projects.

I have been saving all the Christmas cards I have received for many years and have quite a collection. I love to find ways to re-use them. I have been working on this Friends and Family Christmas Tree Garlandfor a while now and happy to say, it is done. My plan was to make use of all the photo cards I have gotten since I am not a scrapbooker. I thought how nice it would be to wrap my tree with all the friends and family who live far away and that we won’t see during the holidays. Decoratively displaying the garland will bring them a little bit closer at least in spirit.

The garland is quite easy to make. First you need to figure out how long a garland you want. Estimate how many cards, sequins, beads, and jump rings you will need, then begin creating it in stages. 1. Cut the cards. 2. Punch holes in sequins and put on jump rings. 3. Make wire loops for the beads 4. Assembling it.

Material Needed:

24 gauge wire

1/8″ hole punch

Fast Grab Tacky Glue

Deckle Edge Ruler

Needle nose pliers

Wire cutters

Jewerly making pliers

Large jump rings

Christmas Cards – traditional and photo cards

Variety of beads

Scissors

Gather your Christmas Cards

1. Cut greetings and images from the front of cards until you have enough to make a garland for the size you need. Cut the images out in all different shapes for more interest. I chose to make my garland red, green, and white and only used cards in those colors.

Punch a hole in each side of every cut-out.

2. Cut a variety of greetings from the front of cards and keep in a separate pile.

Since I wanted all white greetings, I used the inside message for my garland, but you can use the front greetings as pictured above also.

I used a deckle edge ruler to give my cut out greetings a decorative edge. You could also use pinking or scalloped scissors. Punch a hole in each side of the cut-out.

Cut out the photos of your friends and family from all the photo cards you receive.

and punch a hole in each side.

Sequins

This step is optional, but I wanted to add a little glitz. I layered a green sequin onto a red one and used Fast Grab Tacky Glue to adhere quickly.

Then I used a hole punch to make the center hole bigger for a jump ring to go through.

Add a large jump ring to each sequin.

Beads

Create the beads with wire loops to connect the cards. Thread wire through bead -

and then make a wrapped loop. For more detailed directions on how to do this, go here

Repeat on other side so that when you are done your bead looks like this. Repeat on all your beads.

Assemble

Attach the beads to the jump rings and close with needle-nose pliers.

I used pearls, and a variety of different styles of red and green beads.

Display

Over doors, windows, mantels-

I can’t take credit for this very clever way to make your own French enameled tags. Rachel at One Pretty Thing found this project and shared it on her site. I read the post and loved, loved, loved the tags and couldn’t wait to make them to label my kitchen baskets. Gail, at Can’t Stop Making Things came up with this project. She used brass key tags and stamping supplies to make perfect replicas of the enameled number tags that the French use in winemaking. She has an excellent and easy to follow tutorial on how-to make them. They are very easy and if you are a stamper- super simple.

These wine tags were Gail’s inspiration.

Gail noted that she bought the tags at Ace Hardware Store. That is the only place I found them. Lowe’s and Home Depot do not have them. If you have an old-fashioned hardware store in your town they may carry them also.

I took her advice and used clear stamps for perfect placement of the numbers on the tags. You also need a Black StazOn stamp pad and clear embossing powder. I found these at Michael’s.

I thought these tags would be the perfect detail to hang on a set of baskets I have in my kitchen. You can see more about them here, in a post about my kitchen make-over.

Here they are-

Before

And with the added detail of the enameled tags

After

I am collector of throw-away” stuff”. Not junk, but honest to goodness – discards. My friends and family know to give me their throw-aways, which are different than cast-offs. Cast-offs are unwanted items like furniture and lamps. Throw-aways are bits and pieces of packaging, parts of items – stuff that seems useless once it’s original purpose is complete. Throw-aways are what I can’t seem to say “no” to. I love the challenge of coming up with some new use for these discards that will be Ohhh… la la worthy.

Recently, when I saw a bag filled with film canisters at a local camera store being thrown away – I had to speak up. I couldn’t bear to see it tossed and asked the salesman, if I could please have them. He handed the bag right over to me and asked what I was going to do with them. I told him, I didn’t have a clue, but I will come up with something sooner or later.

These plastic film canisters are becoming obsolete, but can still be found at camera stores and where film is processed. Here are my rescued throw-aways.

Before

After

Prest-O Change-O ! Add some decorative paper, buttons, an earring, tulle, some sheet music, along with some hot glue and you have-

Pretty mini- gift containers.

They make giving something little-extra special.

Gifts that will fit:

Anything small – earrings, rings, and other jewelry (if the jewelry is on a hanging card, discard the card and place the jewelry into a piece of tissue paper), rolled up dollar bills, a key to something big, like a car.

Top: Mother of pearl button with a tulle rosette and rhinestone button glued on. Canister Cover: Gift-wrap

Top: Vintage button Canister Cover: Sheet music

Top: Square button with a silver pearl button glued on top. Canister cover: Wallpaper scrap.

Aren’t they pretty? They were practically free – only the cost of the materials I used to decorate them with – most of which were throw-aways, too.

How would you add your style to a film canister and what would you put in it? I would love to hear your ideas?

I have been trying to get all my overdue outdoor projects done this past week. I have been pretty successful. I wish I could tell you that I just love to do these projects, but that would be lying. The biggest reason this project is complete in a timely manner is because friends are coming to stay with us for a few days. This was the motivating factor in my sudden burst of energy to give this swing that hangs from the pergola on our deck a makeover. I don’t think there is anything more motivating to get DIY projects done than having guests to your home whether it be for over night or a party.

This swing is very comfortable, but I wanted to add a cushion to it, not only for comfort, but to add a pop of color as well. I love the upholstered look of cushions, but also love instant gratification and being able to easily make something with fabric without sewing a stitch.

Before

Here is my swing in my garage waiting for it’s makeover. It was covered in a greyish cast of worn off stain and mildew

I washed it with detergent and mildew remover, then rinsed and let it dry out in the sun. Look at the arm, do you see how it is worn. I won’t have to sand this – it is very smooth. I didn’t paint this it, I used solid color stain that just wears away over time. This was after 3 years outside, except when it stored in the basement during the winter months.

I have found Behr House and Fence Stain the best product for outdoor wood. It holds up beautifully, is easy to apply, and best of all, easy to clean up with soap and water – my kind of product. You can see from this beaten and battered can – that it has been used many times. If you have ever painted with oil based outdoor paint, you know it smells and can take days to dry. When it gets old, it gets chippy and needs to be sanded before painting, not so when you use a solid color stain.

I set the swing up on a table in my garage and gave it 2 coats. I let it dry for 1 hour between each coat.

I then hung it back on the deck under the pergola. This is my favorite place to sit in the evening, especially in the fall when it starts to get cold. I bring out a blanket, some hot tea, and get all snugly and gaze at all the stars in the night sky.

For the cushion: I went to my local Joann’s Fabrics on a day when all the foam was 50% off. I had no idea that it was on sale and was happy to get such a great deal! I needed about 5 feet. Cost was $24.00. It is 2″ thick foam and very dense. To cut it to the exact size I needed, I grabbed the electric knife from my kitchen drawer. (The only other time this knife gets used is to carve the turkey on Thanksgiving.) I have a T-square and measured and marked where I needed to cut.

Super easy to cut foam with an electric knife. If you don’t have one, take your exact measurements to the fabric store and have them cut both width and length for you. Take the excess home to use for another project.

To make the no-sew cushion cover: pretend the foam is a gift box and wrap it as you would a gift, using fabric instead of wrapping paper.

Use large 2- inch safety pins instead of tape. I got mine at the dollar store.

Fold over the raw edge of the fabric and pin every few inches along this no-sew seam to hold the fabric onto the cushion.

Wrap the corners neatly and pull taut and then pin. The width of my foam was almost the width of the fabric. Normally I would like to have a bit more fabric to pull over the side edges, but this works. No one will see the pins.

Flip it over and then it is ready. I placed it on my freshly stained swing. I wanted this cushion to be easy to take on and off. I didn’t want any ties to deal with, so I made sure the foam fit very snugly, so it stays put when I sit on it and easy to grab to take inside when it suddenly starts to rain.

After

I am a visual girl…I like to see things, pretty things, tactile things, organized things. I love office, stationery, and art supplies. I am not a tech-ie and don’t want to have everything including the kitchen sink in my computer files. I like connection, hands-on to all my contacts, links, codes, passwords, urls, user names, etc, etc, etc… I love the Rolodex system and this one I found on Brian and Kristen’s Photostream on Flickr makes my heart go pitter-patter. Ohhh la la … I want it…BAD! It is handcrafted and so colorful.

I have always used a Rolodex, but since I started blogging, I needed a bigger one and found one that I think I can transform to look similar to the one I am drooling over above. Having something so pretty, neat, and organized and in my own style makes me want to work at my desk. I could leave the Rolodex I found plain and boring, but by adding some stylish touches to it will elevate the time spent working at my desk into an extraordinary experience.

I found this Rolodex at a local discount store. I got two, one for me and ONE FOR ONE OF YOU to add your own style to it. Details at the end of this post on how to enter the giveaway.

Here is what my new Rolodex looked like right out of it’s clam-shell packaging. Very business like and practical, not my style, so I took it apart. The little blue logo on the front comes off easily.

This is the base that holds the cards.

These are just your ordinary brown lunch bags that I ripped up to used to decoratively cover the base. You could use just about any paper to cover the base. Other options to consider - maps, pages from an old phone book, gift wrap, paper place-mats from your favorite diner – let your imagination and personal style guide you.

I used a 1″ paint brush and Mod Podge to apply the ripped up lunch bags to the base. I kept the runner for the cards free of the paper and Mod Podge so that the cards would still go up and down the runners smoothly.

and I let it dry for about an hour on a foam plate.

No, it is not a toaster!

This is the best part -as it is free, but shhhhh! - don’t tell anybody. I went to the paint store and picked out paint chips in all my favorite colors to make the tabs.

I made 1,2,3 templates – right , middle, left tabs out of one of the Rolodex cards and taped a tab I made onto each one to use as tracing templates.

I found graph paper and colored index cards at Wal-Mart for a few dollars to make some decorative cards like Brain and Kristen used.

I then sat in front of the TV and traced and cut until my finger’s bled I had enough to fill my Rolodex. I mixed the plain cards that came with the Rolodex with the colored and graph paper cards to place behind each lettered tab.

I then went to my junk jewel stash and found a belt buckle.

I made my monogram on my computer and sized it to fit in the inside circle of the buckle. To protect it, I covered it with clear acetate that I cut from the clam-shell packaging and glued it to the back of the buckle.

And glued the monogram buckle to my new, colorful, and pretty Rolodex.

I used a piece of textured wallpaper on the front tab.

I am in love. Thank you Brian and Kristen for providing the inspiration.

Now onto the giveaway. To win this Rolodex.

This is a fun trash turned into treasure something useful project. I call my creation “Jewelry for the Garden”. I came up with this idea after my hubby asked me if I could make something to mark the veggies and herbs that he recently planted in our garden. I could have used a number of things as markers – the stamped spoon idea is so cute, but I don’t have any extra spoons. Tongue depressors or Popsicle sticks – they break a part. I could have went to a garden shop and bought some, but I don’t want to spend money on something I knew I could make. So I looked around the house and found these 3 items.

Wire hangers from the dry cleaner, orange juice can tops and bottoms, and a few beads from my collection.

Before

After

Cost: Nothing Time to Complete: 15 minutes = A Happy Hubby He would have been fine with just the OJ lids on the hanger, but I had to add a little style to them.

They are very easy to make. The hardest part is waiting until you have collected enough OJ cans to make enough markers for all the plants you want to mark in your garden.

1. Pull the wire part of the hanger from the cardboard tube. One on each side. This will be the hook on the top of the stake.

2. Untwist the hook part of the hanger.

3. Open up the hook, by spreading the two wires apart.

4. Cut in the center with wire cutters. You have just created 2 stakes to hang the OJ lids on.

5. Press the smaller hook end back a bit with your fingers so that it is closer to the wire behind it.

6. Mold the bigger hook end with your hands so it resembles the ones shown in the photo below. This end will go into the ground, so it does not have to be perfect. It will give the stake support.

7. Optional: Spray paint silver to match the OJ lid.

8. If you have a Dremel drill - drill 2 holes in an OJ lid – one at the top and another at the bottom. Make sure the bottom hole is close to the edge of the lid so you will be able to thread a jump ring through it. I placed mine right in the lid’s groove. If you don’t have a drill, an awl and a hammer will also make a hole.

9. Add some pretty beads to a jump ring and attach to the lid. I was going for an all green look so the markers would look nice, but would blend in with the garden at the same time.

10. I tried using a stamping set to mark each lid, but the metal is too soft, so I used permanent markers. If you want to stamp the names on each marker – use tin can lids that are opened with a can opener that doesn’t leave the edges sharp. Most tin can lids are bigger and have ridges in them. I like the OJ lids - they are smooth.

11. Push the larger hook end into the dirt and never again forget what you planted. The beads and the lids move in the breeze and jangle a bit- it might scare the birds and other animals who may decide to make a feast out of your garden.

Have you made anything out of trash lately that you would like to share? I always love to see clever ways to repurpose items that we would normally toss in the trash.

When I was a little girl, Barbie - who would be a vintage Barbie today was my favorite toy. My twin sister, Carol and I usually played with her with our neighborhood girlfriends. Off we would go many a morning to their house with our packed Barbie cases in hand, not returning until our mom called us home for dinner. I can’t recall any other time in my life that I had such a large haute couture wardrobe that fit like a glove and was all neatly arranged and stored in a highly organized traveling closet. Early Barbie clothes were not just “doll clothes”, they were true miniature knock-off’s of late 50′s and early 60′s era fashions. They were made with great detail and the fashion trends of the times were closely followed making them highly collectible today.

I don’t play with Barbie anymore, but thought it would be fun to see some of the favorite outfits I used to dress her with on a daily basis. I didn’t want to display a doll, but came up with this tassel idea. The best part about doing this for collectors is that you don’t have to alter the dress at all.

Turn back time and bring your childhood memories back by going up to your parent’s attic and dusting – off your Barbie stuff.

I found that using outfits with high collars and sleeves look the best, but experiment with different outfits until you find one you like or that will coordinate with your decor.

I used a wood piece that was shaped like a hanger. I found it at the craft store. It was called a wood leg. I went back to the craft store to get more, but they didn’t have any. You could use a Barbie hanger also.

If you can’t find a wood leg or have a hanger, I saw these wood letter ”I”s that would work just as well.

1. Spray paint the egg cup and wood leg with spray paint making sure all areas are covered. Let dry.

2. Cut one piece of ribbon to 18 – inches in length.

3. Fold ribbon in half to make a loop. Thread beads and buttons onto cut ends of ribbon and slide them up the ribbon leaving about a 6-inch loop.

4. Thread the ends of the ribbon through the top of the egg cup until the bottom is snugly on top of the egg cup.

5. Tie ends around the wood leg or hanger.

7. To make tassel: Determine how long you want ribbons to hang from the bottom of the dress. Cut a piece of cardboard to that measurement and add the length from the bottom of the to the bottom of the hanger. This will be used to wind the ribbon around.

8. Gather the ends of each of your coordinating ribbons in one hand and start wrapping them around the cardboard until there is no ribbon left on the spools. If one of the ribbons ends before the others, keep winding, you can trim any short or long pieces in the next step. ( Figure 1)

9. Cut the wound ribbon along one edge of the cardboard, holding the other end in your hand.

(Figure 2)

10. Cut a 6-inch piece of ribbon and tie a knot around the center of the pile of ribbons.

I just love the Dollar Store. Don’t you? You never know what you are going to find. It is a hit or miss, but when you do come across something nice or that has great potential – all you can say is Wow! It’s only a $1.00 and you instantly think you should buy more than one because it is such a good deal. I had one of those moments last week when I found two black frames that had two pieces of glass with fruit prints sandwiched between them. You can see right through the glass as the art is only in the center. The see-through section acts like a border. The print isn’t my style and I knew I was going to take the glass out and re-place it with something more to my liking. The frames reminded of a project I made a few years ago.

This frame was made by sandwiching a starched and pressed vintage hankie between two pieces of glass. I had the picture framing glass cut at the local glass shop. I used a lot of Windex with a lint free towel to make sure it was super clean before I put the hankie on the glass and then covered it with the second piece. I hot glued along the line where the rim met the glass to hold the glass in the frame. I made three of these, each with a different hankie, they go up the stairs in my foyer.

Even more surprising, the frames came with saw tooth hangers in place. The glass was held in with hot glue.

I used a stitch ripper, it was handy and it worked like a charm to remove the hot glue. I just dug the one end under the glue and pulled up. Be gentle though, because you are working with glass. Best to put on some safety glasses and gloves.

I created what I wanted to replace the fruit print in Microsoft Word.

I bought transparency sheets at Staples for $1.00 a sheet. I put a sheet of it into my printer and pressed print.

Let the transparency dry for a while before handling it. Use a lint free cloth to hold edges of sheet so you don’t leave any finger prints on it.

The fun thing about using a transparency sheet is that what ever color the wall is, that will be what color shows through the frame.

I put hot glue back into the corners to hold the 2 pieces of glass in the frame.

After
I distressed the edges of the frame with sandpaper to give it more character. Total cost: $2.00
