DIY Home Improvement: Budget Bathroom Makeover for $265

This bathroom has come a long way from the builder beige and stock cabinets that came with the house when we first moved in.

Bathroom BEFORE Makeover

I have recapped everything I did for this bathroom makeover in this post and have included links to the actual tutorials if you would like all the specifics for each project.

How To Add a Decorative Front to a Bathtub with Beadboard and Molding

This bathroom had one of those modular shower enclosures in this bath that I had to keep as this was truly a budget project.

How-to-build-a-bathtub-surr

I wanted to make it blend into the background as much a possible so I made a bead board frame to hide the front. The other way I made it less noticeable was to paint the room’s walls the same color as the enclosure.

How-to-use-molding-to-make-

My initial plan was to make the decorative front in front of the tub – level with it, but I would have had to move the shower curtain rod out and it would have landed right smack in the middle of the window.

I went to Plan B which was to wrap the decorative front over the front edge of the tub so the shower curtain rod could stay where it was.

How to Add Wood and Molding to Frame a Mirror

Next I moved on to give the existing mirrors a bit of style. We bought them at Home Depot when we moved into the house.

Bathroom-Mirror-makeover-be

We installed them with mirror clips as a temp fix that lasted till well… this past month.  It turned into a long term fix, time to get it right.  I think the new mirrors are my favorite part of the makeover.

How To Install a Board and Batten Treatment to Walls

The part of the makeover that took the most thought was installing the board and batten. Lots of things to think about – how far apart I wanted the boards, thick or thin boards, how many obstacles I had to work around, how high etc.

I had some of the boards cut to the exact size I needed at Lowes, not only to make the job easier, but so the boards would fit into my car to get them home.

The mitered corner cuts I had to do on my own. The miter saw was set up in my garage, this bathroom is upstairs – I got  a lot of exercise. I just pretended I was at the gym and was on a Stairclimber. I used all pre-primed MDF boards.

I like using the MDF because there are no wood knots and every piece is uniformly smooth. I used Liquid Nails to attach all the boards so I didn’t need a nail gun, but a level is a must to make sure your boards are vertically as well as horizontally straight when you attach them to the wall.

I spaced the boards 12” apart which made it easy as I just placed a wood 12” ruler between the boards to get perfect spacing.

How-to-install-board-and-ba

2 coats of paint and lots of caulking- it was done.

How to Make a Small Window Look Bigger

The window in the bathroom is not very big, it actually always looked squashed to me. I fixed that by adding a piece of plywood and crown molding above it.  It now has much more impact.

Adding-molding-above-a-smal

I chose the wall color to match the molded tub – I wanted the tub to blend more seamlessly in the room – not stick out.

Painting the wall above the board and batten the same color creates a nice flow around the room.

When I added the molding above the window I knew I would be adding this type of valance –it works with the line of the window.

It is a very simple project that anyone who knows how to wrap a gift box and use a glue gun can do.  I found the fun fabric for $6 a yard.

  1. Hi Diane, I absolutley love this and the step by step directions for each part of the renovation is just so amazing so thank you. Would it be possible to use just the pvc for the tub or will i need the wood and mdf as well?

Just wondering from reading others concerns about eventual molding in the area and just dont want that problem later on.

    Thank you!

  2. I wasn’t fussy about the window valance it didn’t seem to blend in with the rest of the diy.

  3. Suresh Roy says:

I impressed with your work. You are creating beautiful bathroom like work by a good designer. This is incredible work by you. Thanks for sharing with us.

  4. I can’t believe the change! It looks like a different room!

  5. cctv dealers in hyderabad says:

This website certainly has all of the info I needed concerning this subject and didn’t know who to ask.

  6. I’m curious what the tub surround looks like from the tub side? I get the facing but I’m curious about the top piece.

  7. I am so impressed with your creative ideas for updating your bathroom! You’ve really shown that one doesn’t need to undertake a total reno to achieve a fresh, new look, and for considerably less money too! Great way to budget and kudos to you for demonstrating it can be done!!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Thanks Lee Anne – I just moved into a new to me house that needs lots of updating. I hope to transform it on as small of a budget as I can.

  8. Sara @ Biscuits & Burlap says:

Gorgeous! I definitely needed to read this. I have been avoiding redoing my bathroom since I bought the place and the outdated wallpaper, cabinets, etc have just about become unbearable. This gives me hope that I can make it a bathroom I love on my single school teacher budget. Thanks for sharing!

  12. Hi, I was wondering what the paint color is ABOVE the boards? thanks!

  13. Thanks so much for explaining that! Makes all kinds of sense. I love it and am going to show my husband.

  14. That is beautiful! I am curious about the beadboard/trim treatment along edge of the bathtub. Are you not worried about that wood contacting water and so on? I have thought about doing that in my bathroom, and that’s the thought that always stops me.

All your hard work has definitely paid off!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Kathy – The top board is not wood or MDF, it is made of PVC, called PVC board. It is for outside use and will not rot. It can get water on it and not warp. I would not have done the surround without it. Under it is wood and MDF. If the shower curtain is closed some water gets on the top PVC board, but not on anything else.

      1. Hey Diane!
I love the remodel you did! I love the wall color you chose. Do you remember the name of it?

        1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Elaine – I mixed Ben Moore Shelburne Buff with white paint. I had both left over from previous projects. I mixed them until the color was the same as the tub surround. I wanted to match it so it would disappear and look seamless with the room.

  15. marble/granite contact paper on the vanity would be beautiful!! This bathroom update gave me some great ideas. THANKS!!!!

  16. I never comment on makeovers – but WOW this is incredible.
My partner has been out of work for a year now too – in NZ – amazing what we can do when we set our minds to it.

  17. You did a wonderful job. I wish I would seen this months ago. And your new bathroom is great. Congrats…

  18. This came out very nice, and a job well done….the only thing that bothers me is that you used MDF in the bathroom….the moisture is going to destroy that material….with in 2-3 years everything is going to swelled up and cracking at the joints

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi James – It has been 3 years since I did the bathroom makeover and the MDF has not swelled at all. I primed and painted it, perhaps that added with the fact that the bathroom does not get very moist or humid after taking a shower has kept it looking nice.

  19. This is beautiful! Thank you for the inspiration. We are in the same boat–my husband is out of work, and I am trying to work after fourteen years of being home with kids–and we need to spruce up our home so that we can move as soon as we find something somewhere. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing these beautiful, inexpensive ideas! I’m excited to get started on our bathrooms! (And if we don’t move and I get to actually ENJOY the bathroom, all the better!)

  20. Can you tell me the manufacturer or pattern name of the vinyl sheet flooring? Believe it or not, I’m trying to find it. Hoping it isn’t discontinued, but ….

  21. I don’t even know but all I feel is so damn proud of you. What a wnderful job. Proof a little thought and care is what a beautiful home really means. Not buckets of cash but loads and loads of loving attention. Good on you girl!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Thanks Colleen – I enjoy the thrill of the challenge to find ways to save money and still get a room to look and wear well. I used to work in retail display where we had zero budget and were expected to come up with eye-catching displays for the store using only what we had on hand in a prop room. It is how I learned to decorate.

  22. Your bathroom is so pretty. What a great job you did and on a realistic budget. Like someone mentioned previously, many supposed “budget” renovations cost thousands of dollars that I just don’t have right now thanks to having two boys in college. And thank you so much for the step-by-step directions.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Thanks Kc chick – I had two girls in college a few years ago and remember how much tighter our budget for living was then. When I did the bathroom, the youngest was still in college. I found the decorating process was much more enjoyable trying to find ways to make a vision come to reality when you have to think out of the box and be more resourceful. I think it gives the house more character and makes it truly our own. It makes me happy to know that what I share and write about is inspiring for you. XO

  23. Elizabeth says:

This is the answer I have been looking for. I have wanted to change out our old oak moldings for white but didn;t know how to incorporate the almond coloured sink, tub and toilet. This is perfect. In stead of the tub enclosure I have room to add a curtain rod on the outside of the tub and floor length drapes. Thank you so much.

  24. I am late to your blog, but I have been so inspired! You’re a genius. How the heck did you paint the cabinets
in your family room? Brush, machine? I’m salvaging a bones gorgeous shelving cabinet from my mother in law because of you…Thank you!
    Geri

  25. While I think the end result is really great, I wonder about the fabric choices you made. The shower curtain has a totally different feel (feminine, traditional) than the window valance fabric which is much more offbeat and modern. The colors in these fabrics do not harmonize or speak to each other either. Could you explain your thinking behind these bold selections? Thanks.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Ann – Decorating successfully is all about the mix. The right mix for you. Nothing needs to be matchy-match anymore in decor. I like to mix things up and tend to like rooms I see online and in magazines where the homeowner showcases their style over having a room look “themey” or “matched”. It is no longer the norm. Personal style reigns over having to match. I like to mix and coordinate. It gives a room more character so it does not end up looking like a furniture showroom where everything is of one style.

  30. Hi! Just wanted to thank you for the inspiration! This room inspired our recent bathroom re-fresh. I just posted about it a few days ago so it’s kinda funny to me that you happened to link back to your awesome makeover today. If you’d like, you can see what we came up with here. We are loving the update!

  31. Good day! I know this is kind of off topic but I was
wondering which blog platform are you using for this site?
I’m getting tired of Wordpress because I’ve had
issues with hackers and I’m looking at options for another
platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the
    direction of a good platform.

  32. I found you via Pinterest and I LOVE this bathroom remodel. We are purchasing our first home and it has a very similar bathroom. It will be the first room remodeled, it has some hideous 1970’s wallpaper that must go. I have been thinking about getting a saw for all the DIY projects I plan to do with the house, and the house has a woodworking workshop already made so I guess I will have to bit the bullet and get a table saw and get working on this. I simply can’t believe how a few changes and a few hundred dollars can make such a HUGE difference. Thank you for the inspiration.

  33. Alison Peters says:

wow.. i wish i had that much creativity!! But thank god for the internet.. now i can “borrow” yours

but seriously, its nice to see a budget makeover which is exactly that. Something that atainable to the average family.. and doesnt require $50,000 worth of specialist tools to help with the build ( something that is often forgotton in other tutorials)

keep up the good work … and ideas

  34. This bathroom transformation is so inspiring. You say you matched the paint color to the tub–do you remember the name of the color? It looks like a great neutral that would go with any color scheme.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

I mixed Benjamin Moore Shelburne Buff with white paint until it matched the tub surround.

  35. Your bathroom is amazing! It gives me hope for my outdated bathroom with the exact same set up! I love it, Kudos to you!

  36. I love how you updated the bathroom. It looks beautiful!!!

  37. What is the towel holders made of?

    1. Diane Henkler says:

I bought them at IKEA. They are metal with a hard resin style paint finish.

  38. Hi there,
Great job. You should be proud of your workmanship. Quick question: how high are your ceilings? I love the idea of the board and moulding in the walls, but I’m not sure how well it would work on our standard height (2.34m) ceilings. Thanks.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Debbie – The ceiling height is 8 feet.

  39. Great job! Very imaginative and inexpensive.

  40. I am blown away by this. Too often I see “budget” makeover and then find it’s a “budget” of 1000’s of dollars. Not MY budget I say. But this is POSSIBLE and so beautiful!

  41. Are the ceilings in this bath “normal”
Height? I’m thinking this would work well in my bath but it is not as large as yours and I am a little hesitant because I’m afraid it will feel crowded. Also, board and batten, you just apply your horizontal top board and vertical boards to the wall? No other wood? Thanks for sharing! I’m feeling very inspired.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Julia – The ceiling height is 8 feet and yes the boards are applied directly to the wall – no other wood, once it is caulked and painted it will look seamless.

  42. Love the colors! Great job. We’re about to do the same for our house this summer and this is great inspiration :)

    Tina.

  43. Ruth Dahlinghaus says:

These are great ideas! I have a similar shaped bathroom, and the towel hooks actually caught my eye (I have 3 kids and no towel bar space except under the window!).

Can you tell me what you did for the hooks?

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Ruth – I wish I could tell you I made them, but I didn’t. Many readers have asked me about the towel hooks. They are from IKEA. I bought them 18 years ago, they no longer carry them. They are the perfect hooks for kids since they are covered in a shiny white rubber coating that hold the towels on. As you know kids have no skills when it comes to hanging up their towels. These hooks made it easy for my girls.

  44. A truly beautiful job. Fortunate to be able to take your time with it. I like to do that when building quilts: just take my time.

  45. Absolutely beautiful! You are very creative. Thanks for the inspiration.

  49. I am in awe of this bathroom. I have plans for mine of putting beadboard from floor to ceiling and faux tin tiles on the ceiling. However, I dislike my vanity and mirror and lights and this is giving me ideas of how to totally change their look.
I am going towards a farmhouse look in my little ranch style home.

  53. You are super super super creative. What an unbelievable talent you have. I love all your ideas!!

  54. Wow, I am so excited. I want to use every single idea…the only problem I am having is deciding if I do my kids bathroom or my master bathroom just like this. Thank you so much for just the inspiration and instructions I need.

  55. I cant believe i found this. You are my angel! I just bought an old house, and with a new baby, our budget is extreamly tight. I am slowly trying to make this house my own, but had no idea where to even start when it came to the bathroom. I was browsing bathroom makeovers today and all of a sudden…. there it was! Every dream I had and more, right in front of my eyes. This is the bathroom I’ve always wanted :-) Ican’t wait to get started on it! Thank you, thank you for posting this. *Amanda*

  56. Diane…I searched the internet for bathroom redo ideas and we are totally copying yours! Our bathroom has the same layout as yours so it will be easy to copy. I’ve already ordered the same fabric and we are going to start the board and batten after we lay new tile. Thanks for your ideas and wonderfully thorough explanations. I have been wanting to redo that bathroom for 10 years, but we thought we had to do the tub and everything. You’ve inspired us.

  58. Alert Electrical says:

Such a massive transformation! I’ll be honest, I didn’t like the lilac purple it was before (a little too tacky for my taste) but now it looks just like something out of an interior design magazine, all modern and fresh and stylish! Love the ‘wash hands’ tap too!

  59. how did you do the bead board on the bathtub?

  60. What is the material you used for the wall molding (mdf boards?)…i really like that idea. is it really time consuming and difficult to complete?

    1. Hi Franky – I used mdf boards. If you have a good power saw, it goes pretty quickly and not too difficult. The crown molding around the top of the mirrors took longer than putting the boards up on the wall. I took my time doing it. I measured the boards and cut them one day, installed them on another, and then caulked and painted them over a few days.

  61. Thank you so much for sharing. I am about to venture out and try to remodel for my Mom for the first time. The lay, before and after photos, and your comments are such a great help for people like me. I wish I could ask you questions about my projects. Once again, thank you for sharing. Your awesome;p

  62. What a beautiful transformation. Just beautiful

  63. Thank you so very much for your practical help and suggestions! You have saved some of us bathroom-reno-hopefuls hours of researching these techniques. You’ve also shown what a stunning transformation can be done with hard work and creativity. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

  64. Leigh Ann says:

Came across your site looking for a way to stain a bed black for my daughter. Can’t wait to try that, BTW. I have a question about the mirror. I am redoing my guest bath and want to add trim to the mirror. The mirror however is in a corner, so there are two pieces; and it goes all the way down to the backsplash already. How do I add trim to the bottom when there is no space? Thanks!!

    1. Hi Leigh Ann-

It the mirror can’t be moved up on the wall, then you might have to place the molding right on top of the mirror. If you end up placing the molding on top of the mirror, all the other pieces will have to be on the mirror also so that all the joints will match up at the same level from the wall. (The bottom piece on the mirror will be raised up a bit more because of the thickness of the mirror. The sides and top don’t have to be on all the way on the mirror, like the bottom, but at least a part of it so that all the molding is raised from the wall at the same level. You could put a shim under the top and sides that is the same thickness as the mirror to make sure that they stay flat and don’t angle to the wall. I hope this makes sense. It is hard to explain.

  65. What a great job you did! The new bathroom looks fabulous. I’m on a tight budget and have a home that needs fixing; I’ll definitely be trying some of this. Inspirational!

  66. How about mi casa and su casa ….?

  67. What a wonderful idea and it looks beautiful! I’ve been trying to think of something I could do to my bath walls,& now I know … thanks for the great inspiration…I am going to do this.. Also, love all your other ideas as well, including craft room…. thanks again.,.,.,

  68. What a wonderful transformation and your instructions, well….they are great. I do have one question. You may have told this and I missed it in the read. Are the mirrors prefab or did you do the molding around them also? I have three tubs just like this in my home….and they are all going to get this treatment. I will enjoy following your site.

These pictures are outstanding. Such simple looking changes and yet so important! One issue though; the plywood right under the crown molding looks flat. Why don’t you decorate it with some kind of a design? Something that’ll set a contrast to the wall color :) by the way, I know few guys, who could carry out bathroom fitting London work with this much skill.

  72. I’m in LOVE with this bathroom makeover. The window is gorgeous. Mirrors are perfect. Board and batten looks fantastic. Seriously… nothing but GOOD things here! I couldn’t help but share it on my facebook page today.

    1. Hi Eileen-

Thanks – It is very easy – not hard at all. The hardest thing will be finding a large enough surface to work on. I usually use the floor.

  80. The bathroom looks stunning and I am in awe of your $10 floor transformation. That was truly an amazing DIY! You are so innovative. I love the white beadboard; it looks so clean in bathrooms! I am pinning this for future reference… :)

Fabulous post – amazing transformation and great tutorials!

  131. Cindy@OldTimePickers says:

Thank you so much…you have solved a major problem for me. I will be redoing my bathroom on a budget and had it all planned out including the board and batten. Problem is I have a blue bathtub and was not willing to tear it out. Using your idea and adjusting it a bit, I’ll be able to hide that tired old eyesore. ♥

    1. You could have that blue bath tub sprayed by a professional. I’ve seen it done and it came out beautifully! Get at least 3 estimates and ask for references from the companies that have had it done and if the homeowner will allow you to see the results, by all means go. That blue bath tub will not go away any other way unless you wanted to tear that out completely.

  132. Marty@A Stroll thru Life says:
