Every year I always tell myself I am going to get a head start on Christmas decorating and shopping so that I am prepared when the holidays roll around. It would feel good to be able to sit back and enjoy the season with less rushing around and an endless “To-Do” list.
Every year, I fail!
This year I made it a priority to start on a few projects. Even though I may not be in my house this Christmas, I still wanted to make this little jingle bell door knob hanger. It makes a cute little hostess gift as well as a fun little project to make with your kids.
For me Christmas is not Christmas without hearing the gentle sound of tingling jingle bells. I have a few sleigh bell door knob hangers that have been passed down to Ed and I, but they are red. I like to decorate with bright colors which was the reason I made mine using pink and green felt.
How to Make a Jingle Bell Door Knob Hanger
- 2 pieces of felt
- Jingle Bells
- Embroidery floss
- Large eye needle
- Paper plate to make template
1. Trace and cut out 2 circles from felt, 5 inches across.
2. Trace a circle 2-1/4 inches across in the center of the circles.
3. Cut circles out with scissors.
4. Sew two circles together using a blanket stitch. Leave a 2-inch opening along inside seam.
Sewing a blanket stitch is a very easy way to finish the edge of the hanger. Here is how to do it: Bring the needle out along the edge of the felt. Insert the needle above and to the right of the starting point and bring it out in line with the last stitch of fabric edge, keeping the thread behind the needle point. Continue working from left to right and top to bottom.
4. Stuff batting in to wreath to fill. Sew opening closed.
5. Space jingle bells around the ring, mark placement with pins.
6. Sew bells on. Hide knots in thread by tucking them inside the seam of wreath.
Hang over door knob. Bells will jingle whenever you open or close the door. :-)
Merry Christmas in July! :-)
