A Little Bit of This & That…

June 17, 2011 · By Diane Henkler · 12 Comments

This post is going to be a little bit of everything.  There are so many things that I have been wanting to share with you – a little bit of blog keeping and a few fun things that I am excited about.

1. Bathroom Progress

I had my hubs install a new light fixture in the bathroom.   I don’t do anything electrical – could have something to do with a jolt I got when I was working in retail display and was up on a 20 ft. ladder to hang a sign from the ceiling.   Seems there were some faulty wires in the store’s ceiling and when I touched the metal ceiling grid to hang the sign, I got a jolt that I will never forget. The shock jolted me off the ladder and I landed in a round rack of clothing down below.  I wasn’t injured as the clothes cushioned my 20 ft. fall – just hated that jolt and never have done anything electrical ever since.

I got the light fixture on clearance at Lowes for $53.00.

2. Apartment Therapy

I was so excited to see not one, but two of my DIY projects over on Apartment Therapy the past two weeks.  As any DIY decorating blogger knows – this is exciting and I have to say thanks to Jason Loper over there for liking my stuff xo.   The latest project was the white starburst mirror that I made for Momtastic.com.    I got the idea after seeing the one Kristi from Addicted to Decorating made. I thought it was one of the best diy starburst mirrors and had to make one for myself.  Thanks Kristi for coming up and sharing such a great idea.  The other project was the brass chandelier I transformed.

3. A Big “XO”  to Nan at Playful Décor

Nan has been a reader of my blog for a long time and I was so honored that she wanted to feature me on her blog- Playful Décor.  She writes about her home and how to decorate kids’ spaces.  If you have kids and need ideas on how to decorate their rooms– you will love looking through her site for inspiration. I love her “To Do” list at the bottom of her sidebar.  I think I should publish mine as it may give me more incentive to get it all done.      You can read the post and visit  Nan’s blog – Playful Décor

4. A Shout-Out to Knock-Off Décor

If you are like me when you look through decorating catalogs you not only flip through the pages to see what is new, but for hackable  DIY inspiration as well.  The popularity of  Knock-Off Décor shows just how many of us enjoy this pursuit and have come up with inexpensive versions of hundreds of decorating catalog items ourselves. If you have never been – click over to get inspired by all the clever hacks.    The candle chandelier I made for my deck is being featured there today.  Thanks Beckie!

5. Momtastic.com

Most of you know that I write a weekly post over at Momtastic.com. You can find a new post every Friday. I have the link to it over on  my sidebar. Today’s  post is about playing musical lampshades.

6. Advertising

I few months ago I began to accept advertising here at In My Own Style to support my DIY habit.  I wish I had a huge bank account and didn’t need to worry about how much I spend on decorating projects, but I do.    There is still some wonky-ness going on where you see two ads in a row show up on my sidebar and header. There should only be one and I am told that is it being fixed.  You can read more on my rates, here. Advertising page.

I have been wanting to do something like this since starting my blog.   I love seeing items over on Pinterest and have boards over there, but I like to keep my inspiration close at hand. You can click over to the page and see the first project I found to share with you.

Whew…that was a lot of this and that.  Now it is back to my  bathroom  makeover and trusty table saw.  I plan on getting the walls done in the bathroom tomorrow as we are hosting two college students on Monday night.  When I said yes to them, I totally forgot I have tools, a ladder, wood, molding, paint, and stuff all over the bathroom and guest room. Yikes!!! What was I thinking?   I better get a move on.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

      Hi Michael
Thanks – eventually I will create something more from it, but one thing at a time. This is my start.

Thanks Gail – I have been thinking on all this for a long time and said to myself “just do it”. No reason to wait. Just wish I had some more back end HTML skills. :)

    Hi,
Your bathroom light is very pretty, and I don’t blame you for staying away from electrical anything after your fall. Thank God the clothes rack was there.
You’ve had lots of lovely things happening! Good for you.
    Hugs, Cindy

Woo! Thanks for the update! Lots of interesting stuff coming down the pike, and I’m so excited for it. You are definitely one of my favorite bloggers. I always feel like I can actually do – instead of just ogle – lots of the projects that you feature.

And thank goodness for that pile of clothes!

Thanks so much. I can too vividly remember that fall and how it felt. I even hate just plugging plugs into sockets.
