THIS GIVEAWAY IS OVER
Last week I showed you what I did outside of my house to get it ready to sell. This past weekend, I did a little updating to the inside, to the master bath.
I liked how my bath looked and functioned but neutralizing the decor and removing the occupant’s taste and personality is an important staging trick when selling your house. This helps buyers who tour the home more easily envision their furnishings and lifestyle in the home, making them want to move right in. :-)
To make this happen…paint is the tool of choice. Paint is truly AMAZING! You know how much I use it to transform rooms and furniture to add my personal style to my house. Paint is also amazing on the flip side of the coin, when you want to de-personalize!
Home Painting Tip:
I found a paint that does the job extremely well and the best part is it only costs $20 a gallon!
The master bath had grasscloth wallpaper that needed to come down. When I started to remove it, I got a little surprise…I totally forgot that many years ago I had painted an accent wall in the room, blue.
Whoa!.. surprise…surprise. Since I was going with an off-white color to neutralize, I knew I had my work cut out for me and guessed it was going to take at least 3 coats of paint to cover it.
Well I was pleasantly surprised to find that the $20 gallon of paint covered the blue…
…with only two coats. A win in my book with less work for me.
So what is this $20 a gallon budget-friendly paint that goes on smooth and dries to a lustrous finish?
The paint is from Glidden called High Endurance. It is sold at Walmart. I had it mixed up in the color Crisp Linen in a satin finish to neutralize the bath, but you can get it mixed up a wide variety of colors. It is a soft white that makes pure white trim, pop!
I cannot tell you how happy I am with this paint. It was my first time using it and I was a little skeptical of how a $20 gallon of paint would cover and look. It was a win all around!
I will be using it again, but in my new house to add my personality and style to our new home, wherever that may be.
Do you have any painting projects planned for your home? If so, I can help one lucky reader buy some paint and more with one $100 gift card to Walmart.
Giveaway IS OVER
Congratulations to the winner: Cathy E.
This post is sponsored by Glidden; thank you so much for supporting the sponsors that make In My Own Style possible.

I also LOVE the Glidden High Endurance paint. It has primer in it already, so there are no ‘see through’ spots. I got mine at Wal-mart too. It was on clearance for $11.00 …! WoW. I’ll use nothing else now. It spreads evenly without having to use a lot of paint and pressure rolling it on (which is good for my tired painting arm and shoulder…!) Very satisfied.

I would paint my upstairs bedroom that is currently dark chocolate brown (thanks to the prior owner).
lydia says
In my master bedroom, the previous owner had a hideous shade of a brownish-pea green…! Yeee…what the hell..? I truly understand. I used the Glidden High Performance paint. It was on clearance at Wal-mart for $11.00 a gallon. It also has primer in it and covered that ugly paint in 2 coats of White satin/eggshell finish. I procrastinated terribly until I could no longer take it. Surprisingly, it only took 2 days. Just me doing the painting including the ceiling. I feel much better. :~)

Blue is my favorite color so I guess I would start in our master bedroom since our bedding and matching drapes are a Waverly print that is white with shades of blue and yellow. New paint would work wonders!

Sherry says
Diane, I just used this paint myself! I wanted to paint an accent cabinet that was a garage sale find. It had been painted maroon. I, too, was skeptical about the coverage but it is an amazing paint, covering in only 2 coats. I wanted to add feet to the cabinet and was inspired by the wooden feet and placement that you used on your filing cabinet. They were attached and painted as well. So happy! Thanks for your creative ideas and products.
ps I would use the paint to freshen a bench, a cabinet that belongs to my son, and the front door.
Sherry

My living room/kitchen! I have an open floor plan that I fell in love with when I toured the house….unfortunately, every room had a nice coat of BEIGE..all the dang BEIGE! I’d love to finally start adding some personality to my little house :)

The Office/Dog Quarters needs fresh paint in our home! To win would be AWESOME!

My mother’s bathroom. It’s an awful fuchsia color and makes the room look small and cramped, even though it isn’t. I’ve used Glidden paint in my home and love it!
Kim says
I need to paint many rooms but the one that needs it the most is the half painted living room!! Thanks for the giveaway!!
megan says
I mistakenly painted the nursery a navy blue and hate it…so now I have to cover it and I dread the 3 coats of paint it will take to cover the blue. Hopefully, I’ll win and can get some Glidden.
Glenda says
I’m moving into a new home, so I’d like to paint over some of THEIR old walls, not the ones in my current home. Having just staged a home for sale, I know first hand how important good coverage with paint can be. Thanks for the example with this brand — so helpful!
Heather says
Oh! I wish I had known this BEFORE I spent twice that on paint for our sunroom! LOL! The next room on my list is the front entry way – it’s tiny but I know it will look much better with a fresh coat of paint. My issue in that room is that the walls are sanded and glittery – and dark sage green. We ripped off some really old wall paper and it seems that the paper on the drywall came with it! Yikes! The textured paint was a quick fix …. that I’m now regretting!
Sheila Fitzgerald says
I have a powder room that needs help. I am thinking of doing Board & Batten up about 5 ft from the floor. Have you done a Board and batten project?
Heather says
That’s exactly what I was wondering about doing! It’s tiny though, with THREE doors and an opening to our front room. It also has a super high ceiling … the math for figuring out the board and batten with so many crazy opening boggles my mind … but I just scored enough 1/4″ x4″ x 8′ oak slats to try it.
Deb C says
Honestly, EVERY single room in the house needs new paint. I am either tired of the paint or the paint is just tired.
Erin says
i would love to lighten up the office! :)
Sheryll & Critters. says
I am so going to miss your house …….. and I have never actually been inside of it except for your blog.
I would do my narrow living room, dining room combo….. it is that awful paneling, not even real wood paneling. I want white or as close to pure white as I dare…….. oh I am so hoping to get enough paint to do it……. I have NO living room window, since some previous owner decided to take out the window and install a fireplace (in FLorida?)…….. well it is like a dungeon and I am so hopeful to lighten and open it up a bit. I so love your home.
Rosie says
Well slap me silly, a gallon for $20? I am planning on painting my kitchen. I painted the cabinets all white and painted the blue tiles in a black and white pattern. I should have painted the walls white but didn’t. I also have two bedrooms to paint but all this won’t happen until fall as I am canning right now. Diane, I was also a Display Coor. at Elder-Beerman and was in charge of 3 stores. I am now 67, retired and a frustrated decorator. Love your style. Thank you for sharing.
Denise says
I would like to paint my kitchen.
Sherry Justus says
We have been slowly (we have 8 kids so every house project takes 8 times longer to get it done) been repainting our 1970’s home. I’d like to paint the laundry room next. It is currently a peach color and the cat has made the walls into his personal scratching post!

I am retiring at the end of this year. We are getting our house ready to sell so we can downsize into something different for this next phase of our life. We are starting with the bathrooms since that is the most obvious in need of updating.

I would paint my kitchen. Thanks for the chance!
Donna Dickey says
I am painting the doors in my house and I too have been using Valspar and unhappy with it so I would like to try this.
Lisa S. says
We are renovating our entire house and it is all getting new paint, so any room will be needing it. I can just envision the new 2nd floor bath with a soft light finish against the varied colored sea glass tile I will be using.
Thanks for the contest!
Tiffany says
Truth time! I’ve been in the midst of painting my bathroom for MONTHS. Gotta get that finished.
Susan M. says
My recently single daughter – a mom of two little ones – just recently painted the bathroom and being on a very tight budget she chose this very same paint. I was skeptical, but like you, was more than pleasantly surprised at the quality of this paint. If I should be the lucky winner, I would surprise her with a few gallons so that she can continue with sprucing up her little “new life” abode. I suspect the first priority will be covering the awful purple on the living room walls! Thanks for the opportunity – my fingers are crossed!
Ashley H says
I’d love to paint my daughters room, I’m thinking light aqua :)
Kim O. says
Nice neutral for my hallway!
Kelly T says
I had been using Valspar paint for years watching the price go up and up and noticing that it was getting thinner and thinner. So in a cost cutting way I decided to get a cheaper paint for my base coats…what a surprise to find this Glidden paint!! It’s thicker and provides the coverage that I needed, so much better than the Valspar!! This is my new go-to paint from now on!! I can’t wait to do my living room now!
Kim says
I need to paint my living room. This paint looks great. I like how it covered the blue in only two coats. Good luck on your move.

Jamesie says
Like to start with our bathroom, it measured 63 inches X 129 inches. I have brown wood paneling and white concrete wall with tile bath tub. Not sure to paint the paneling surely needs a different color. I love purple!
Terry says
When my son was 4 years old he chose primary red, blue, green and yellow for his walls and ceiling. Adorable, I thought. He’s now 18 and his room is my craft room. I have dreaded painting the walls because I thought it would take layers and layers of a neutral color to cover it. I would love to be able to cover it in just 2 coats!
Teri says
So many large rooms in our house need repainting…because, duh they are the hardest and take the longest to do, but i would say the family room would be my first priority. Thanks for the giveaway !

Julie Morris says
I’m going to Walmart in the a.m. to buy a gallon of this paint I have a bathroom that is dark brown and needs to be painted I have been avoiding this room because I had a 12 x 12 room that took 3 gallons of paint to cover the same color and it still needs a fourth coat
Michelle says
Perfect timing for this post. I painted a small bedroom with only one window a darkish blue. Not sure what I was thinking…… I want to repaint in a light neutral but was not looking forward to priming plus 2 coats of paint. I will definitely try this Gliden paint. Thanks!
Lisa says
We are working on painting many rooms in our home. Also hoping to downsize in a couple of years. Next up are the master bedroom and bath.
JANE says
Like you, Diane, I need to cover up a pretty bold color, but in a bedroom. My color, however is RED. My daughter had this boudoir idea in her head a few years ago. Now that she’s married & out of state, I’m attacking that bedroom to make in more calm and serene. (Kind of makes your eye twitch just walking past!) I was thinking it would take at least a dozen coats of paint, but if this Glidden High Endurance does half of what you say it does, I would be thrilled!
Amy says
Getting ready to paint the dining room. But I also need to remove some wallpaper!
Tracy Estes says
I would paint my kitchen.
Livivua says
I would very much like to redo our chocolate dining room and put up a color more lively.

It would be hard to choose a single room, but i’d have to pick our hallways. They need to be brightened up with a lighter shade of paint. Thank you for the chance to win!
Kathy E. says
I do have a room that needs paint! My daughter moved out 2 years ago and I haven’t touched her room to redecorate. (I have managed to store a bit of sewing supplies in there, though.) The walls are a deep red and I’d really like to brighten it up, so I need some paint! Glidden sounds like it would do the job…in 2 coats! Yeah!
Judy says
My guest bedroom needs a fresh coat of paint!

BETTY says
I would use it to paint my master bath. It really needs an update. It was last updated about eight years ago and is looking pretty worn.
Linda Luke says
I am so inspired by this post. I have the same grass cloth wallpaper in my living room and it is getting old. It was here before I bought my home 12 years ago. I have been waiting too long to bring it down, but now I am excited to get the project going. I have no idea what is under it, especially since my home was built in 1973, but I am sure I will need a good quality paint to do the job. Thanks for sharing and inspiring me.
Martha N. says
Every room in the house needs repainting! $20 paint that covers so well sounds like the paint for me!
Christine says
Thanks for the tip, Diane. I’ve got several rooms that need painted but if I had to choose one to start with, it’d be the guest room. I’m impressed that a $20 gallon of paint can cover a bright color like blue in just 2 coats! The last paint I bought was a Valspar paint & primer (and it was a lot more than $20). After 3 coats, it still didn’t look completely covered and I was painting a cream over a medium beige. I was so disappointed. Next time–I’m trying Walmart. Thanks again!
Jo @ Let's Face the Music says
We’ve recently painted almost every room in the house but the powder room needs a major makeover and some semi-gloss white paint is planned for the wainscoting. I would love to win the gift certificate, Thanks for the giveaway. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

We are also getting our house ready to sell–probably sometime this spring. I need to repaint the living room, dining room, hallway, and master bedrooms for starters. We also have a small bedroom that is painted “little girl” pink from when my daughter was little! I suppose we should neutralize that before we sell, too! Thanks for a chance to win.
Barb from MO says
Like you, stripping bathroom wallpaper and this looks like the paint I will need, I have no idea what is underneath!
Rita Marnell says
I was all ready to paint my living room last winter, starting with the ceiling, when I looked up and noticed the beginnings of what turned out to be a very large and dirty water stain. We learned a new term in Massachusetts last winter …. “ice damns”. I had water leaking from the top of almost every window in my house. I have been in my home for 39 years and never had so much as a dime-sized water stain on any ceiling. I had stains on the ceilings of three bedroom upstairs, but the living room ceiling was by far the worst. After everything dried out, I finally painted the ceiling in the living room. It took two coats of Kilz and two coats of ceiling paint, but the ceiling looks great. I would like to paint the walls a light gray. Any recommendations on a shade of the Glidden paint?
Darla says
In the process of redoing our sunroom so we have lots of painting to do!!

Anne says
I want to paint our bedroom walls gray! When I decided I wanted to do this, I was way ahead of the gray trend. However, due to my tendency to procrastinate ( and the demands of our four children) I am now way behind the trend! Oh well, ….I still want a gray bedroom! :)

Hi Diane – I am in the midst of painting my living room and I noticed today when I was at my new Walmart that they had Glidden paint…boy was I surprised that your post was all about it! Thanks for the heads up once again on another great product – you’re by far my favorite product tester ha!
SHIRLEY says
Diane, I live in a sub-division that recently had its twenty second birthday so my house is not exactly new. Every room in the house has been painted at least once and most, quite a bit more than that. When I found the perfect color for the master bedroom I found one that I thought would be perfect for the adjoining master bath; be in harmony with the bedroom. Nope, didn’t happen Its not the bathrooms fault that I can’t love it; poor thing! Its about time that this bathroom get into my good graces, once again. Diane, help me to redeem myself. Award me the $100 check and allow me to make this bathroom feel more than just USED.
Casandra says
We are in the process of redoing our dining room floor, and with that of course comes a new paint job for the walls. Since I loved what you did with the previous bathroom, I am hoping to paint it two colors, an off white for the bottom bead board, then a chair rail all around, and finishing off with a pretty pastel/neutral green on the top. That means reupholstering our dining room chairs to a nice match. It is a lot of work, but well worth it. Excited about the new look!

I have been living alone for 5 yrs+ until 2 weeks ago. My daughter, son in law, infant grandson, Brooks, 3 1/2 yr. old Lincoln ( my daughter has nannied since he was 9 months old) & our Chinese study abroad student, Victor are now with me for the next 2-3 yrs. Joe is requiring back surgery by Christmas & since I have the room they are here. We gave 3 baths that need makeovers, starting with the gall bath first. Some free paint would sure from me in handy about now! I’ve had the tub refinished already & purchased a new tub hardware kit. It’s going to be nice & fresh. I love the grey/white combo using color in accessories. Pick me!

Thanks for the paint brand tip! I have lots of paint that needs to be changed… I have deep rich colors in my house, which I love, but have grown tired of now. Need a re-do!! I’ve already begun in the master bedroom and bath with a pastel blue-green… going for the sea glass mode… not to light though as I don’t want it to look like a blue shade of white. But beyond that, I need my red great room and dining room re-painted, as well as the kitchen area which is now a bread-basket color… Everything needs to be lightened up!!!! I seriously don’t know what to do there though, as I don’t like pale shades of beige, or ‘builders beige’… I’ll think on this one awhile longer. BTW, sure liked your “book”! Rec’d it recently after finding it on Amazon! Thanks again…

OH my stars, the loft bedroom! High ceilings that will have popcorn scraped off first. (Who thought up popcorn ceilings?) …. or the kitchen… there are a lot of “projects” needing paint. Thanks for the opportunity! :)))

I would like to paint my guest bedroom and bathroom. My house was affected by Hurricane Sandy and while the downstairs and upstairs hallways were painted these 2 rooms were used for storage of anthing salvageable and took a beating with dust and grime.
Thank you for considering me.

Hi Diane. I bet you can relate to what I need to do? We have lived in our home 15 years now. Still have some remodeling stuff to do (we had a major, 6-year family medical nightmare in there) and then there’s the downstairs that WAS done and now needs to be re-done since it’s been rode hard and put away wet by 3 kids and 2 adults! So, that’s what I would use the paint for…our old downstairs “interim kitchen” that will now become a craft space! Wahoo! Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Diane, thank you for sharing your updates and what you have done. Makes me realize there is light at the end of the tunnel. I will be updating my Mum”s home ( bathroom and etc). Mum passed away end of April almost made it to her 100th birthday and will be getting her home ready to sale. Will be redoing her hall bathroom, removing wall paper that has been there 34 years and giving the room a fresh coat of paint to go along with the floor we just replaced. Thank you for taking the time to read our comment.

My bathroom! It’s small, long, and narrow, has hideous pinkish/beige countertop, accent tile, and bathtub. The cabinets are also painted the same color. Any advice on a color(s) I might try. Gutting the bathroom is not an option, although I wish it was.
Megan says

Hi Diane, My husband and I would love to paint our family room a soft color – the room doesn’t get much light, and the brick at the fireplace is painted gray like the exterior of the house. Your ideas are so good, I love to see your projects! Thanks for all the encouragement.
Michelle says
I would like to repaint my kitchen. It’s currently a light blue. It was 20 plus years ago that we painted it. The kitchen really needs new flooring, new lighting and new paint on the walls. I would like to paint my entire interior! I’d start with our main hallway though. It drives me nuts…scuff marks, leftover “silhouette” of our former thermostat, mystery stains, you name it!

This paint sounds great I need to try it. I’d like to paint the kitchen that means cabinets, too. I had used Behr Premium, as I had seen it had high ratings. I used two coats over off-white, and it really needed a third coat to be perfect, but I couldn’t do it. It could be me, but I had someone who paints all the time helping me, so I don’t plan on using that paint again. Glidden next time! Your room looks nice!
Heike says
Ugh, my kitchen needs painted so bad. I despise painting though. Maybe with a brand of paint that actually covers up it may not be so horrible.

I am all over Glidden now! I’ve been using the Glidden Trim and Door paint you recommended and recently painted a laminate tile bathroom floor, which I used Glidden Gripper as primer… never would have thought of Glidden, but it’s certainly done a great job for a good price! Glidden has been around Fo-Ever! I’m going to repaint my entire living room again, ceiling, walls, and trim, and when that’s done, my bedroom needs a whole new look too. Thanks again!

I am VERY excited to hear positive reviews for $20(!) a gallon paint. We moved a year and a half ago and I have lots of tan that needs some new life ~ it’s getting pricy at the $50+ BMoore paint I’ve been using. I love Ben Moore but this is getting ridiculous for the amount of painting I love to do. Next up is my 14 year old daughter’s bedroom (once she decides on a color, this is taking a long while). Thanks for the tip – I’m definitely going to try this.
Marilyn says

The walls look so fresh and clean. I am slowly updating our master bath so that is the room I would paint. I have a actually used this paint on a project for my sons room a few months ago. This is a very timely post – I was just talking to my husband about the painting we need to do in our home! We are wanting to brighten the home with light colored walls!

I just tried this paint 2 weeks ago and loved the results, too! Great coverage using a white tint to cover a brown accent wall. With those results, I’d love to use it to update the walls of my dining room.
