Home Painting Tip + $100 Giveaway

THIS GIVEAWAY IS OVER

Last week I showed you what I did outside of my house to get it ready to sell. This past weekend, I did a little updating to the inside, to the master bath.

I liked how my bath looked and functioned but neutralizing the decor and removing the occupant’s taste and personality is an important staging trick when selling your house.  This helps buyers who tour the home more easily envision their furnishings and lifestyle in the home, making them want to move right in. :-)

To make this happen…paint is the tool of choice.  Paint is truly AMAZING!  You know how much I use it to transform rooms and furniture to add my personal style to my house.  Paint is also amazing on the flip side of the coin, when you want to de-personalize!

Home Painting Tip:

I found a paint that does the job extremely well and the best part is it only costs $20 a gallon!

Real Estate Staging and Home Painting Tip

The master bath had grasscloth wallpaper that needed to come down. When I started to remove it, I got a little surprise…I totally forgot that many years ago I had painted an accent wall in the room, blue.

How to prepare a home for sale

Whoa!.. surprise…surprise.  Since I was going with an off-white color to neutralize, I knew I had my work cut out for me and guessed it was going to take at least 3 coats of paint to cover it.

Home-Selling-tips

Well I was pleasantly surprised to find that the $20 gallon of paint covered the blue…

Affordable paint with great coverage

…with only two coats. A win in my book with less work for me.

So what is this $20 a gallon budget-friendly paint that goes on smooth and dries to a lustrous finish?

Staging tips

The paint is from Glidden called High Endurance. It is sold at Walmart. I had it mixed up in the color Crisp Linen in a satin finish to neutralize the bath, but you can get it mixed up a wide variety of colors.  It is a soft white that makes pure white trim, pop!

I cannot tell you how happy I am with this paint. It was my first time using it and I was a little skeptical of how a $20 gallon of paint would cover and look.  It was a win all around!

I will be using it again, but in my new house to add my personality and style to our new home, wherever that may be.

Do you have any painting projects planned for your home?  If so, I can help one lucky reader buy some paint and more with one $100 gift card to Walmart.

Giveaway IS OVER

Congratulations to the winner:  Cathy E.

I also LOVE the Glidden High Endurance paint. It has primer in it already, so there are no ‘see through’ spots. I got mine at Wal-mart too. It was on clearance for $11.00 …! WoW. I’ll use nothing else now. It spreads evenly without having to use a lot of paint and pressure rolling it on (which is good for my tired painting arm and shoulder…!) Very satisfied.

I want to paint my living room a light tan with cream trim. It is a deep gold now and I love it, but the room is really small and I think re-painting it to a lighter color will make it look larger and lighter.

In my master bedroom, the previous owner had a hideous shade of a brownish-pea green…! Yeee…what the hell..? I truly understand. I used the Glidden High Performance paint. It was on clearance at Wal-mart for $11.00 a gallon. It also has primer in it and covered that ugly paint in 2 coats of White satin/eggshell finish. I procrastinated terribly until I could no longer take it. Surprisingly, it only took 2 days. Just me doing the painting including the ceiling. I feel much better. :~)

If anyone had told me that ALL the rooms in our next home would be taupe I would have said “no way.” Well, almost eight years later they are all still taupe. Blue is my favorite color so I guess I would start in our master bedroom since our bedding and matching drapes are a Waverly print that is white with shades of blue and yellow. New paint would work wonders!

Diane, I just used this paint myself! I wanted to paint an accent cabinet that was a garage sale find. It had been painted maroon. I, too, was skeptical about the coverage but it is an amazing paint, covering in only 2 coats. I wanted to add feet to the cabinet and was inspired by the wooden feet and placement that you used on your filing cabinet. They were attached and painted as well. So happy! Thanks for your creative ideas and products.

ps I would use the paint to freshen a bench, a cabinet that belongs to my son, and the front door.

I’m moving into a new home, so I’d like to paint over some of THEIR old walls, not the ones in my current home. Having just staged a home for sale, I know first hand how important good coverage with paint can be. Thanks for the example with this brand — so helpful!

Oh! I wish I had known this BEFORE I spent twice that on paint for our sunroom! LOL! The next room on my list is the front entry way – it’s tiny but I know it will look much better with a fresh coat of paint. My issue in that room is that the walls are sanded and glittery – and dark sage green. We ripped off some really old wall paper and it seems that the paper on the drywall came with it! Yikes! The textured paint was a quick fix …. that I’m now regretting!

That’s exactly what I was wondering about doing! It’s tiny though, with THREE doors and an opening to our front room. It also has a super high ceiling … the math for figuring out the board and batten with so many crazy opening boggles my mind … but I just scored enough 1/4″ x4″ x 8′ oak slats to try it.

I would do my narrow living room, dining room combo….. it is that awful paneling, not even real wood paneling. I want white or as close to pure white as I dare…….. oh I am so hoping to get enough paint to do it……. I have NO living room window, since some previous owner decided to take out the window and install a fireplace (in FLorida?)…….. well it is like a dungeon and I am so hopeful to lighten and open it up a bit. I so love your home.

Well slap me silly, a gallon for $20? I am planning on painting my kitchen. I painted the cabinets all white and painted the blue tiles in a black and white pattern. I should have painted the walls white but didn’t. I also have two bedrooms to paint but all this won’t happen until fall as I am canning right now. Diane, I was also a Display Coor. at Elder-Beerman and was in charge of 3 stores. I am now 67, retired and a frustrated decorator. Love your style. Thank you for sharing.

My recently single daughter – a mom of two little ones – just recently painted the bathroom and being on a very tight budget she chose this very same paint. I was skeptical, but like you, was more than pleasantly surprised at the quality of this paint. If I should be the lucky winner, I would surprise her with a few gallons so that she can continue with sprucing up her little “new life” abode. I suspect the first priority will be covering the awful purple on the living room walls! Thanks for the opportunity – my fingers are crossed!

Now that she’s married & out of state, I’m attacking that bedroom to make in more calm and serene. (Kind of makes your eye twitch just walking past!) I’m impressed that a $20 gallon of paint can cover a bright color like blue in just 2 coats! The last paint I bought was a Valspar paint & primer (and it was a lot more than $20). After 3 coats, it still didn’t look completely covered and I was painting a cream over a medium beige. I was so disappointed. Next time–I’m trying Walmart. Thanks again!

I was all ready to paint my living room last winter, starting with the ceiling, when I looked up and noticed the beginnings of what turned out to be a very large and dirty water stain. We learned a new term in Massachusetts last winter …. “ice damns”. I had water leaking from the top of almost every window in my house. I have been in my home for 39 years and never had so much as a dime-sized water stain on any ceiling. I had stains on the ceilings of three bedroom upstairs, but the living room ceiling was by far the worst. After everything dried out, I finally painted the ceiling in the living room. It took two coats of Kilz and two coats of ceiling paint, but the ceiling looks great. I would like to paint the walls a light gray. Any recommendations on a shade of the Glidden paint?

Every room in the house has been painted at least once and most, quite a bit more than that. When I found the perfect color for the master bedroom I found one that I thought would be perfect for the adjoining master bath; be in harmony with the bedroom. Nope, didn’t happen Its not the bathrooms fault that I can’t love it; poor thing! Its about time that this bathroom get into my good graces, once again. Diane, help me to redeem myself. We are in the process of redoing our dining room floor, and with that of course comes a new paint job for the walls. Since I loved what you did with the previous bathroom, I am hoping to paint it two colors, an off white for the bottom bead board, then a chair rail all around, and finishing off with a pretty pastel/neutral green on the top. That means reupholstering our dining room chairs to a nice match. It is a lot of work, but well worth it. Excited about the new look!

I’ve already begun in the master bedroom and bath with a pastel blue-green… going for the sea glass mode… not to light though as I don’t want it to look like a blue shade of white. But beyond that, I need my red great room and dining room re-painted, as well as the kitchen area which is now a bread-basket color… Everything needs to be lightened up!!!! I seriously don’t know what to do there though, as I don’t like pale shades of beige, or ‘builders beige’… I’ll think on this one awhile longer. BTW, sure liked your “book”! Hi Diane. I bet you can relate to what I need to do? We have lived in our home 15 years now. Still have some remodeling stuff to do (we had a major, 6-year family medical nightmare in there) and then there’s the downstairs that WAS done and now needs to be re-done since it’s been rode hard and put away wet by 3 kids and 2 adults! So, that’s what I would use the paint for…our old downstairs “interim kitchen” that will now become a craft space! Wahoo! Thanks for the inspiration!

Mum passed away end of April almost made it to her 100th birthday and will be getting her home ready to sale. Will be redoing her hall bathroom, removing wall paper that has been there 34 years and giving the room a fresh coat of paint to go along with the floor we just replaced. This paint sounds great I need to try it. I’d like to paint the kitchen that means cabinets, too. I had used Behr Premium, as I had seen it had high ratings. I used two coats over off-white, and it really needed a third coat to be perfect, but I couldn’t do it. It could be me, but I had someone who paints all the time helping me, so I don’t plan on using that paint again. Glidden next time! Your room looks nice!

Our Master Bedroom is a darker blue color and we have wanted to paint it since we moved in! But, after painting the entire house we decided to wait. I am going to have some time off soon and am looking to paint it a more neutral color! Love your site, I come here daily for fresh ideas!

Oh, my gosh. where to start. My whole interior is painted brown and you can peel the paint off in long stris. The kitchen and bath are both detested yellow. I want colored walls but disability check does not go far. $20 paint is the best thing I have heard about today. I read and look at so many blogs and I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to see the things I can make, paint, just makes me so happy.
I bought a tab le at the Habitat store I am slowly figuring how to raise up for the height ai want. I am so excited. I want a light apricot kitchen and apple green back stairway to basement. i need that waking up quick color as I stumblew to let puppy out at 6 am. Living room, going up he stairs I am thinking soft gray. I need a blue bedroom and the bath a rosy color. Thank you for the chance to win paint I could really use.

Hi Diane, what a fabulous tip about Glidden paint! This formerly Sherwin Williams girls has been made into a convert after seeing what it did to cover your wall. amazing! and at much less cost than using Killz or multi-coats of paint. I love painting and am looking to redo my laundry and guest rooms.

I am VERY excited to hear positive reviews for $20(!) a gallon paint. We moved a year and a half ago and I have lots of tan that needs some new life ~ it’s getting pricy at the $50+ BMoore paint I’ve been using. I love Ben Moore but this is getting ridiculous for the amount of painting I love to do. Next up is my 14 year old daughter’s bedroom (once she decides on a color, this is taking a long while). Thanks for the tip – I’m definitely going to try this.

He covered it with a picture, but we need to repaint both there and the bathroom. Sounds like this gift card would cover both rooms! Thanks for all of your fun giveaways.
