Today I want to share a few of my little indulgences with you …
We all like to buy ourselves something little every now and then – like fresh flowers or a chocolate bar. As much as I love these – they don’t hang around for long.
With Mother’s Day this weekend, I thought it the perfect time to share some of the things I have purchased for myself that have stayed around for a long time. They make life better for me in some way or another – every day. I call these items – little indulgences or gifts from me to me. My tried and true.
Most of these items I have listed here are inexpensive – a few, a bit more costly. Some I take everywhere I go; others just make a task easier to do. One is new to me.
These are my personal favorites – the things that get me through my day – every day.
No. 1: I have used this for 3 years, and was so happy to see a new shipment of it show up at my local Walgreens. I have used and tried a lot of brands of sunscreen from cheap to the most expensive department store cosmetic company brands. Neutrogena Baby Sunblock is the BEST sunblock for your face – EVER!
I call it my skin perfecter. Yes – it is a sunscreen. It is not sticky, has no smell, and does not sting your skin or eyes. I use this every day. When I am outside working or at the beach, I slather it on. It can look white if you don’t rub it in well, but what I found that it does even better than protect your skin from the sun – it makes your skin look amazing when you mix it with a dab of foundation and a dab of face cream.
When I first began mixing it with foundation and cream, I started getting many “You have such nice skin comments”. “WHAT!! stop… NO way! Me, have nice skin?” That is the nicest compliment anyone could ever give me since in my teen years I suffered from horrible acne while my twin sister hardly ever broke out. Teenagers are not nice and when you are a twin and everyone compares you…those teenage years left their mark on how I view my skin. Hearing that I have nice skin would have me pay $100 a bottle for this. Luckily it is a drug store brand for $10. I buy a few at a time because I am afraid they are going to discontinue making it like companies seem to do with so many of our favorite products.
No. 2: Hellooooo….what rock have I been under that I did not know that there were ultrasonic diffusers for essential oils. You know I love to fill all my senses when I am at home with color, sound, and smells. I wrote about some of my favorite room scents a while ago.
I previously used essential oils – mostly lemon and grapefruit in lightbulb ring diffusers in my family room so the house would smell nice in a subtle way. I stopped using them when one fell off a lightbulb and ruined the finish on the table the lamp was on. Since then, I have kept my favorite oils in my desk drawer and when I need a little uplift, I take a bottle out to take a few long sniffs. Rosemary and Sage are good when my brain needs a boost. Lemon and Grapefruit are my absolute faves though. Having this diffuser lets me use the EO’s for room scent again. I have another diffuser upstairs that has a night light. It came with a kit of essential oils I bought. With two dogs and a cat plus a stinky litter box – these oils smell so good without a sickly sweet scent, plus they never make me sneeze.
No. 3: I am always on the look out for clean simple design in the things I use and have around my house. I use Post-It Notes for everything and have them stuck all over to organize papers and to remind me to do things. When I saw this elegantly simple Pop-Up Note dispenser I knew it would make it home with me. It is for Pop-Up Notes that the Post-It Note brand makes.
You simply remove the glass top, lay the pack of Pop-Up Notes on the cork base and then thread the first note through the slot on the glass as you place it back on. I love that I can change the way it looks by the color of Pop-Up Notes I place in the dispenser. The dispenser is part of Post-It Notes “Greener”line of products. I think it is simply tres chic!
No. 4: Hotels seem to think that lofty and big puffy pillows are better for their guests to have a good nights sleep. I throw these pillows to the floor since I prefer a very flat pillow and have learned to take mine with me when I travel. If you prefer a flat dense pillow, I highly recommend this one. It is a Memory Foam Pillow – called The Perfect Pillow. It is for me. It is kinda pricey as far as pillows go, but I would not get a good night’s sleep without it. I bought it at the BonTon.
The only time I don’t take it with me is if I am flying and am only taking a carry-on bag. It would take up too much room. Recently someone mentioned using Space Bags to flatten it. Hmmmm… that is a good idea. Has anyone ever used them? Do they work? I may be looking into using one since I never sleep well without this pillow.
No. 5: Ed and I try to eat as healthy as we can. This spiral slicer is definitely helping. Since we use it frequently, I keep it out on the kitchen counter.
1..2..3… zucchini is cut like spaghetti. Served with sauce or a bit of lemon – we don’t miss the pasta. It spiral cuts any veggie. I like it so much I bought one for each of my daughters as Easter presents. It has 2 other cutting blades that slide out from underneath the base. To clean, I rinse the whole thing under water and dry. Nothing complicated or extra parts that have to be stored elsewhere in the kitchen.
No 6: These two items are little indulgence that I simply cannot live without. They came together in a box with a book called The Reflexology Path. I bought them at Borders Books about 6 years ago. I walk on this cobblestone mat and bamboo step first thing in the morning and the last thing before bed. It is my way of keeping my feet happy.
I don’t take the mat on trips, but the bamboo step travels with me. It makes my feet feel wonderful. Ed thinks it feels like torture. I crave it. Walking on the mat is a little like how it feels when you walk over a seagrass rug in your bare feet. As you can see mine is missing a few stones. I would like to get a new one made with real stones soon.
The bamboo step helps to stretch out the arches of your feet. It takes all the kinks and stiffness out. I sometimes even place the step under my desk and massage my feet as I work.
I looked for the pair, but could only find a similar cobblestone walking mat on Amazon. If you ever see a piece of bamboo like this – you now know that is for reflexology.
No. 7: For Christmas I bought a pair of Puma Fusion Lite Low-Cut golf socks for Ed. A few weeks ago they landed in my sock drawer by mistake when the folded laundry was being put away. In my haste to get dressed one morning, I saw them and put them on and went out the door. Wow – I never knew sport socks could feel so good. A major difference from all the sports socks I have worn before. I have now claimed these as my own.
They don’t slide, slip, bunch-up or lose their shape after washing. They are a little snug and almost feel like they are massaging your feet. I bought them at a local golf shop. I have bought Puma sports socks for women before but they have never felt like these. I don’t know if the reason is just that this style of sock is made better or maybe it is that golfers just get better made socks.
No. 8: And last…this is my newest little indulgence. I didn’t buy these paint brush covers, but they were sent to me. I get many requests to review products. I say no to most of them, but did think these could make a DIYing life a bit easier. I was right. Since I paint something almost every day and throughout each day, the brush covers have come in super handy.
I apply one coat of paint and stick the brush in the cover and forget about it. I don’t have to rinse it out after every coat. This saves me so much time. I have always used plastic bags or foil to cover my brushes before, but the brush cover seals so much better. Your brushes stay moist overnight. I am a fan. The company also makes roller covers.
If I am rolling paint on a wall with a roller, I still have to cover the paint tray when I stop in between coats. I will still use plastic bags for that until someone comes up with a roller tray cover that I like ;-)
What little indulgences make your life prettier, easier, or better?
