Do you get a spring break? I fondly remember a week long break in March when I was in school and then again when my daughters enjoyed it while they were growing up. After my youngest graduated from college 3 years ago, Spring Break doesn’t happen around my house anymore. :-(
This year I am going to make it happen.
Ed has a conference in the Washington, DC area next week. I plan to tag along. I have declared this quick trip, our Spring Break.
I have plans to stroll around DC, do some sightseeing, and to just sit and chill at the hotel to enjoy the unscheduled time to read. And not read just anything, but to read FICTION!
Confession time… Since I started blogging, I have only read a handful of fiction. Almost everything I have read the past 6 years is non-fiction in the way of how to’s…how-to write html code, how to conquer Photoshop, how to rock social media, how to blog better, how to set up DFP…etc..etc.
When you are a blogger, there is always something to learn which leaves little time for reading for enjoyment.
I miss reading fiction. I am craving books to take me away on an adventure to foreign lands, charming towns, and to hang out with a few interesting characters.
When Ed and I took the girls to Mexico over Christmas, I went to the library and checked out a few books to take with me. Traveling with books takes up a lot of space in a suitcase. My oldest, Kelly, has a Kindle, and Ed has a tablet. They had a slew of books at their fingertips that took up zero room in their suitcases.
When we got home, I promised myself I had to simplify the way I read books when I travel and would look into getting a reader or tablet.
A few weeks ago, I entered the digital book world with a Dell Venue 8.
Once I figured out all the bells and whistles, I went online to find some books to read. I started by downloading a few books using Amazon’s Unlimited program. I signed up for the free month long trial. Not sure if it is worth it since all the popular and best sellers are not included and I have a great book resource now at my fingertips…my local library.
With Ed’s help, I learned how to download books for free from my local library’s online site. I needed to download the app OverDrive and then I was in business. So many books, so little time…what do I read first?
This is where I need your help. I would love for you to share the titles of the books you have enjoyed lately in the comments section. I like a wide range of fiction, but mostly like a story that takes me to a foreign land and has intrigue and suspense that keeps me turning the pages.
I have 3 books downloaded so far…YAY! It was easy. Have you read any of these? One of my friend’s loved The Girl on the Train, but not the ending. The Nightingale is about two sisters in Paris during WWII. The Patriot Threat – is non-stop adventure about government secrets, spies, and the race against the clock to save an old US treasury secret from getting out.
I couldn’t wait until next week and started The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah last night. Have you read it? I like that I can make the text as big or small as needed on the tablet; a necessity for my 55 year old eyes. I ordered a turquoise case for it online so it will feel more like a book when reading and will protect the screen.
With the tablet’s long battery life and super thin size, I can read all day and simply tuck it into my tote so I can read in the car, on the train or plane, waiting in line at the bank, or just about anywhere.
Once we get to DC, I plan to use the RealSense 3D Camera as I sightsee. It is not your average tablet or phone camera – it has three cameras on the back that let you refocus and measure objects in your pictures with the touch of a finger. Pretty cool! I am looking forward to learning how to rock this feature.
Now that I have become a digital reader, I want to get a book list going and would love your help with suggestions. If you’re loving or just finished a good book, please let me know in the comments.
I am looking forward to reading fiction again.
