Housewarming Gift

Moving tips

Have you seen the TV commercials that show a doorbell being rung followed by a homeowner opening the door to find big green boxes filled with Swiffer products on their front step?  If you have, then the big green boxes above may look familiar.

Cleaning a house before new owners move in
Kindii, my daughter’s dog looking out the window one last time right before we left the house we sold.

The commercial then shows the homeowner trying out the Swiffer sweepers, mops, and dusters in their home to see how easy they are to use to clean up the messes around the house.

Cleaning tips for moving

Before we moved, I wanted to come up with an idea to give the couple that bought our house as a housewarming gift.

After doing some research, I found that for centuries, a broom is a traditional gift to give to new homeowners.  I like tradition, but thought why not bring the idea into the 21st century with a new and improved way to clean a floor and more.

I was going to try to present the gift just like they do in the commercials, but this didn’t happen since we left for South Carolina a day before settlement.

Giving the Swiffer effect to new homeownder

Instead we left the boxes in the empty and clean family room for them to discover when they moved into the house after settlement.

Gift idea for new homeowners

With a note wishing them many happy years in their new home.

They have a baby, a toddler and two dogs. With all the hardwood floors in the house…

Swiffer products that make cleaning easy

…I know they will become fans of the Swiffer Sweeper and the WetJet Mop when dirty little paws get tracked through the house.

No one likes to clean, but these products sure make the chore of cleaning so much easier and will leave them time to do the things they enjoy.

Swiffer Giveaway Has Ended:

Congratulations to: bnmcgowan

I will be emailing you.

We have wood laminate through most of our house, so the floors would be as obvious choice. We also have vaulted ceilings, each with their own ceiling fan, so the fan blades would be another option.

It would be a toss-up between regular dusting with the Swiffer (which I shamefully admit needs to be done NOW) OR using the Swiffer mop on my kitchen floor for the little paw prints that come through! Thank you for the opportunity to win Diane, God Bless!

    Nice gift to leave behind.

I have to tell you, I had the Wet Jet and just didn’t like it. Left a residue and a line where you stopped like the old sponge mops. I am much happier with my 360 spin mop from HSN or QVC – picks up everything even stuff may have missed when sweeping, even dog hair. I don’t use detergent with it either. All detergents leave a residue with the exception of the Microsoap that comes with the 360 but you really don;t need detergent. Plain warm water works best.

Bread: So that this house may never know hunger…or…So your cupboards will always be full
Salt: Given with the message “That life may always have flavor”, can also represent added luxury or flavor to life
Sugar: Means “So your life shall always have sweetness”
Wine: Symbolizes the hope “That joy and prosperity may reign forever”…or…”That your family will never be thirsty”…or…”So you will always be of good cheer”
Honey: So that you may always enjoy the sweetness of life
Broom: “So your home may always be clean” or “To help sweep away any evil and bad luck”
Coin: “So you may dwell in good fortune”

We had to move from our dream home to a new state last year. We left our old house emaculate. When we got the key to our new house and I walked in I bawled. It was so dirty. There was snot on the walls, dead mice and droppings in the furnace room to name a few and they just left what they didn’t want to take. We are refinishing the hardwood floors this summer and I would use the swiffer on the wood floors!

Visited him over the Thanksgiving weekend and discovered he keeps a neat, organized home, but the white oak laminate floors, baseboards, ceilings and fans need to be thoroughly cleaned. My visit was too short to work on the modest home, but a surprise delivery would cheer him up and hopefully motivate him to perform this cleaning that somehow many guys don’t think is necessary!

What a coincidence…I have used every Swifter product available for years and love every one of them, but today it was too cold to do anything outside so I decided to clean my nine ceiling fans. I only clean them about once a month (or longer) and I have to use the swifter 360 degree duster with the extension handle to be able to reach most of them. I still have to use a step-ladder for some but the extension handle/duster is great for everything out or reach otherwise…art work, shelves, etc. Great products!

With downsizing I have things stored under beds, including daughter’s wedding gown in a sealed box! Ha! I would also dust the 9 foot walls of my house! I am short and finding a way to reach things would be so much easier with swifter products…handles.

I love the swifter surprise commercials! The older couple just melt my heart and the veteran who lost his arm and his family make my heart soar! My flooring is all stamped concrete and mosaic tile in my entry/hallway (gorgeous DIY). We have 3 cats and a dog and that’s a lot of surfaces to keep up with! The first surface I would clean would be my kitchen and then the hallway! I need all the help I can get and would love my own swiffer surprise box! Thank you!

Somehow my 2 Pekingese rescues seem to track in more dirt than my 6 kids ever did when they were growing up, and the kids didn’t shed hair endlessly either. I could really use some Swiffer help on my tile floors, about 1800 square feet of them. They have to be cleaned every day, and this old back is objecting.

Hi, I have light sand-colored tile floors throughout my house and a lovable, but long-haired black cat named Maggie. I brush Maggie’s coat daily but despite my best efforts, I’m sweeping up hair daily! Ugh! I’ve been constantly on the hunt for a better cleaning tool when I read your post on the give-away. Since I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now, and also sharing many of your DIY tips with my only daughter in Massachusetts who is completing a 1year post-graduate veterinary internship, and also has a cat and lives in a house with wall-to-wall wood floors; this give-away couldn’t have come at a better time!

So when the floor becomes unbearable it’s down on hands and knees to scrub the floors. Seem so 19th century. I’d like to be brought to the 21st century and would love to try the swifter products. My mil seems to get more anxious with lots of activity and sounds. I would love to be able to do more “silent” cleaning before she wakes and during her naps.

My eye sight is much better than mil, I admit to being more finicky, we have a dog and I cannot wait 2 weeks to dust, sweep, and mop between cleanings.

I had no idea of the upkeep with the darker wood! They show everything! Definitely, swifter products would be such a help…..and that’s what I would clean with them. Everyday! ggggrrrrr!

Would clean the kitchen/dining area first- watching having my grandsons for a visit = always something to clean. But what a wonderful “problem” to have. Thank you

Thank you for paying it forward! I live in the Southwest, where summer temps can typically range anywhere between 110 and 118. The suburb was once farm land and now here on my corner lot, across the street from a park, it is really, really dusty. (Forget about monsoon season!)

My first go at… the travertine tile throughout. Nine – 10 months of the year, my front door and patio doors are open. And, although wrought iron and screened, the dust ALWAYS finds a way to visit.

I would say GOODBYE to the uninvited guest! But I will keep my Maltese. She is a serious guard dog, despite the fact she brings in treats from the yard.

We have mostly tiled floors downstairs and mostly hardwood floors upstairs – so all of those. But it’d be the tiled hall and kitchen floor first, without question. I haven’t used this product before so I’m interested in finding out how much easier it makes keeping these floors clean.

What a fabulous idea as a house warming gift. I have a white cat who seems to shed his hair all year round. So I have to clean up after him every day, to keep on top of things. I’m not able to enter your competition due to the fact I live in WALES, UK. Which is a Pity as it’s my Birthday on the 20th, and that would have been a lovely present, for making 62years. I hope you are enjoying your new home by the Lake, lucky you. So looking forward to your forthcoming ideas for your new home, so that I can be inspired again, as I begin to start my decorating in the spring.
    All the Best.

    Hi Diane,
Wow, arent you thoughtful…speaks volumes about your heart and soul. I have hardwood floors in my summer camp in NH…and “rubberized” laminate in the basement. My husband calls me the queen of the sweeping, sadly…and of course there’s the dog and the fact that our lake house is on a dirt road!!
I’d rather be kayaking, but gosh, those Swiffers make life so much easier!!
Oh, and since we are considering downsizing here in TX, what percentage (estimate of course,) STUFF do you think you got rid of before your move, and do you anticipate new furniture for your new house? Anything you regret throwing out?
    Thanks, Holly

That is so clever! And very thoughtful! I have two golden’s and live in Colorado. When that snow melts and they come in onto the wood floors they always have to have their paws wiped. But the floors also have to be wiped! We won’t even mention the shedding :) Always enjoy reading your posts.

I should have stock in Swiffer as it seems the dust bunnies appear daily. We do have a dog! She is short haired but still a constant mess. We have tile and hardwood floors so if I won I’d use the Swiffers EVERYWHERE!!! Great giveaway!

What a great idea for a house warming gift! You are very creative and thoughtful! I would do my basement floor. Have stained concrete with a shiny finish and Iwith my dog there is always fluffs of hair to clean up. I also like to keep a swiffer cloth in my car to dust the dashboard and steering column. Since the dog likes to ride in the car there seems to be dog hair there too!

I just had my parent’s old house remodeled after they both passed away. To my great suprise and delight I discovered that all of the old floors that had been carpeted for many years were natural red oak.! I had these old 60 year old floors refinished and they are really beautiful. I am a bachler, 71 years old, and live alone. I have never had to clean hardwood floors before now. I would really love to have the benefit of a Swifter to help me with the dusting and moping. Natural hardwood are a real treat and they need to be taken real good care of.

What a thoughtful and useful gift to give the new owners! A Swiffter set would certainly be put to good use in my house. We have two young kids, two dogs, one cat, and zero carpet. Keeping the floor free of dirt and pet hair is a constant battle. I would first tackle the dried salt puddles from snow boots that appear daily in the entryway! :)

I was going to start to say that I would use the swiffer for my wood floors first but then I realized I always dust first and then sweep. Not sure what the difference is now that I am in a condo but I seem to need to dust and sweep daily.

What a great idea for a housewarming gift for the new owners!!!!! I will have to remember that!!! Basically, every room in my house, other than the bedrooms, have hardwood floors, so I would find them handy. But, since I don’t have any pets or kids running through my house, someone who does would be more deserving.

Looking forward to seeing more updates on your lake house!!!!

I’d clean my hardwood floors and my laminate. I’ve got 12 paws that make little doggy designs on my floors. (Yup, that’s 3 dogs.) The dry Swiffers are a super duper favorite of mine since one of the dogs is a pretty big shedder :-)

LOVE that you gave the new homeowners that gift. :-) I too gave a Swiffer as a gift to the people who purchased our former home. (Dog, child…hubby a fireman. It was a very welcomed gift.)

If I win the Swiffer prize I’ll be using the duster(s) to fight the dust bunnies on my new laminate floors.
