What I Am Going To Miss: NYC

August 17, 2015 · By Diane Henkler · 9 Comments

Since Ed and I made the decision to move, life has been a whirlwind getting the house ready to sell. So much so that I really have not had a chance to think about anything else. Earlier last week when I actually had time to sit at my desk and get some blogging work done, I scheduled a trip to New York City and my heart dropped down into my stomach.  It suddenly hit me it that moving south is going to mean my close proximity to NYC will be no more. :-(

Empire-State-Building-at-night

I love the vibe that is NYC and have since I was a little girl going to visit my grandmother to dreaming of living in the city like That Girl and then attending college there and of course the shopping!

World Market NYC

Tomorrow I am heading to a home decorator’s shopping paradise to attend the grand opening event of the Cost Plus World Market in NYC. It will be a nice break from my moving “To-Do” list.

The store opens in Manhattan this week on Thursday, August 20th. In Chelsea, my old stomping grounds.

World Market

This is big news since World Market does not have a huge presence in the northeast!   My first foray into a World Market was in Atlanta two years ago. I was attending a conference there. A group of conference goers were heading out to dinner and as we were walking to the restaurant I spotted a World Market.

I had never been in the store before and had only shopped online.  After dinner, I headed straight for it and enjoyed discovering unique furniture, home decor, lighting, rugs, and more. I could not buy much on that trip since I could not fit it in my luggage, but now that there is a store closer to me, and in NYC no less, I can enjoy shopping there every time I go to New York for the day or for business.

World Market in NYC

If you happen to be in NYC this week, beginning Thursday, August 20th through Sunday, August 23rd, Cost Plus World Market will be celebrating their grand opening with several events, special giveaways and offers including a tote bag giveaway to the first 100 customers in the store each day. 10 lucky customers will even find a $50 gift card in their tote each day.

Grand Opening Event: Starting Thursday August – 20th to Sunday the 23rd:

  • From 4pm – 7pm there will be music featuring students and alumni from Julliard.
  • Cost Plus World Market will be visiting three top park locations in New York on Thursday, August 20th. Each park will be decorated with CPWM products and include a message that invites customers to snap a picture of them with CPWM products using our hashtag #WorldMarketNYC for a chance to win a $50 gift card.
  • 50+ gift card giveaways at each location (2 hours each stop), plus a 20% off coupon and tote bag
  • For hints on locations , follow CPWM on social media on Thursday, August 20th: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • If you are in NYC this week, click here for a 20% off coupon

Cost Plus World Market is located at 620 Sixth Avenue at 18th Street. It is open 7 days, 8am – 9pm.

I moved to NYC 30 years ago to get away from generic crap stores like this — I may as well live in Dallas since NYC is turning into a bland metropolis faster than they can dump or tear down the one-of-a-kind outposts that made us unique.

Diane, I’m sure you did get a “sinking feeling” in your stomach when you realized that NYC and all of its wonderful culture, including shoppping. I live in a small town in the Midwest where there is NO shopping, not even a decent department store. Having been raised in a big city and then moving here has been a 20 year shock to my system The Cost Plus World Market sounds especially intriguing. There is a World Market about 120 miles from me, I go very occasionally. Usually I just don’t want to drive 2 hours to get there so I shop from them online. Oh how I wish I was close to NYC to attend the Grand Opening, enjoy yourself and shop your heart out.

Have you found a new home and location yet? Just curious…REALLY look forward to your wonderful blog. You inspire me…Moved from the Pittsburgh area back in the early 60s as a single working RN. Here I am in Austin, TX 52 years later and married for 51 of them to a guy from the Pittsburgh area I met at the AF base way back when. I would not live anywhere else. Left the cold that made my bones ache and live where it is like an oven…Hmmmm? What one does for love ! Good luck in your move ! Beth Mosley, RN (Retired)

I read with awe all of the work you are doing on your house! (our poor house needs SO much work . . ). I think of a co-worker years ago who put their bay side home on the market – putting a beautiful garden in at the front of the house (thinking people wouldn’t notice how close to the road it was:) . . . it wasn’t cheap! Do you know within weeks of closing – the people who bought the house ripped out every single plant and planted cement instead:) *they wanted more parking space!

World Market stores are definitely in the south. Depending on where you settle, I bet you’ll find one that’s not too far from you :)

    Diane,
I feel your pain about leaving the NYC area. We recently moved from Princeton, NJ to Texas. When my husband came home to tell me we were being relocated….it felt like we were moving half way around the world. My very first thoughts were….no train into the city for shopping, Broadway, botanical gardens….too many things to list! We’ve moved over a dozen times….I promise you will get through this. Moving South will be a new, exciting experience for you….the people are lovely, very welcoming and gracious and the food—–oh so yummy!
    Good luck!
    Kathleen

Would love to go to the opening. We are headed to the Antique show but think we’ll have to come back and miss it. :(
Hope the moving continues to go well.

Diane, I can’t believe you haven’t had a Cost Plus World Market near you….don’t know how I would ever decorate with out World Market and Home Goods.
