One of the best parts about blogging is that I get to meet other DIY bloggers and blog readers in person who are passionate about the same things I am – decor, creativity, and living authentically. Even though we all have our own unique style and vision, we can sit and chat all day long with each other sharing what we know. It is just the best way to get inspired. I also get inspiration from books. I am a non-fiction book junkie – books with lots of photos and illustrations are what I crave since I am a visual learner. I rarely read fiction.
Recently, I have had a whopping double dose of inspiration. The first – when I met and got to spend time with Ashley and Jamin Mills of The Handmade Home on the trips I have taken as part of the Home Depot Blogger Network. The second – receiving a copy of their eBook last week.
What a Talented couple! Note the – Talented with a capital “T”. Have you ever been to their blog and seen their down to earth, fun, family loving, and stylish home ? I call their blog – The Happy Handmade Home. Everything is so colorful and positive. You will be in awe and find yourself smiling at everything you see and read.
Every project they have done to their house has truly turned it into their warm and loving home. No mass-merchandised big box store furnishings on display – just objects and furnishings that they have found or made using their own hands with passion and the love of creating something truly perfect for them and their children. They just launched an eBook and I was honored to get a sneak peek.
I was blown away by the breadth and scope of the book. Not only from how well the book is written, but the projects are like no other. It is so well organized and visually appealing, I felt like a kid in a candy store – delighted and wanting to devour every page. Having written a book myself, I know what writing one entails. I had the staff at Meredith take the photos, do the graphics and layout for mine. Handmade Walls, 22 Inspiring Ideas on Bringing Your Walls to Life was created, written, designed, and photographed by Jamin and Ashley. It is one amazing and inspiring work from beginning to end.
What I loved best about the book – is that every aspect is truly done in their own style and voice – which I love to see. No publisher telling them which projects to include, how they want the contents presented and organized. It is all them and their unique style.
The book is divided into three main sections: Frames, Art, and Functional: Handmade Walls builds on your personal skill level and it has an easy breezy learning curve. There’s something for everyone in this book. So whether you’re a DIY novice, weekend warrior, or just someone who appreciates a fun read, it’s Jamin and Ashley’s deepest hope that you’ll enjoy something they’ve created just for you. I especially love how they gave each project in the book a name like Stella, Lucy, Charlie.
Each project in the book includes step-by-step directions, complete with easy to follow detailed illustrations, along with a photos, plus tips, & tricks. Also included is a cut and supplies list, price bracket, difficulty level, and time required for each project. They have left nothing out. You are sure to know exactly what you’re diving into before you even begin.
The book also includes a project reference guide and supplies glossary where you’ll find ideas for finishing off those projects. From advice on their favorite tools, to paint colors and step-by-step techniques to help
you out as you create. It’s a great go-to for making your own works of art in your home. And in turn – creating in your own style! That is what your home should be all about – you and your family.

I have a feeling it is only a matter of time until a big name publisher picks this book up and wants to publish it – it is of that caliber! I can’t wait for that to happen because then I will be able to place it on my coffee table and be able to pick it up for instant inspiration.
