Show Me Your Style Link Party

by Diane Henkler on 02/15/2011

I am psyched to get the very first Show Me Your Style link party started. If it is a success, I will host it more often.  You can show us anything that you made or represents your style.

For this party I am going to show you my style in the way of how I like to decorate.  A house filled with all the “perfect for me” perfectness.

If you have been reading my blog for some time then you know that my hubs and I have been living in limbo for 22 months now – since he was laid off from his job of 22 years and is in transition (nice way to say unemployed).  Living in limbo is no fun.  It keeps you stuck – I can’t go forward with any plans, especially in the realm of decorating. Everything I do is with the thought that I may have to move playing in the back of my mind, so I haven’t done too much – only think and plan for when we are no longer living in limbo.

Like most of you, I keep files of what I like and dream about having my house be like one day. I refer to this file as The House In My Head – named after the vintage Dorothy Rodgers book you see below. The book is her story of how she went about building her dream house.  One that would be perfect for living as well as to entertain in.  Since her husband was the Rodgers part of Rodgers and Hammerstein – they entertained a lot!   I just loved the title and had to add it to my vintage decorating book collection.

If you had my House In My Head file on your lap right now and began to page through it you would definitely see what my style in is all about.  It is sort of an eclectic mix – I am not shabby, nor am I chic.  I am not beachy, but I love to live by water. I like modern, but it has to be natural.  My style is just – my style.  I love what I love for no other reason then it makes my heart go pitter-patter.  I have tweaked and edited my style over the years and most of my friends know my style well. The best thing anybody can ever say to me is – Oh! that is so YOU!  I know when I hear that, that I have been successful at fine tuning what works for me.

The most important decorating element to me – is all about “the view”.  I would love to look out to this, but as long as I have something far and wide to look at out my windows I am pretty happy.  It could even be an apartment on 5th Avenue overlooking Central Park – I’ll take it.

The-View

To enjoy “the view” I like lots and lots of windows. My style is all about light.

House-and-Home

This is my kitchen in my next house. Gotta have this counter/cabinet window combo and lots of light!

Cohen-and-Hacker-Kitchen

The style of the exterior of The House In My Head would look something like this.  Plain and simple with lots of windows and white trim.

Cohen-and-Hacker-Architects

The interior would have lots of stone and natural elements going on.

House-Beautiful-Magazine

My style consists of white or light colored walls with pops of color strategically placed.   Does anybody know where I can find doors like the ones in the photo below?

My-Style

My style is pretty casual. It is all about enjoying the simple pleasures in life – an outside swing really makes me happy. It is the best way to enjoy “the view”.

Swings

Now I am excited to see “your style”.  Link up your posts with anything that shows me what your style is all about. It could be your favorite things that define you. The way you cook a certain recipe, the way you entertain, decorate, or wrap a gift for a friend. I want to see the way you do things.

Link up and inspire us. Please include a link back to the party on your post.

Thanks

I ADORE your style. I don’t thing there is a single picture that would be in my idea files, too. Thanks so much for hosting this party!

I have a huge folder of inspiration photos for The House in my Head. I love my house. We’ve lived here 26 years. We never imagined we’d stay this long, but we fell in love with the neighborhood. We’ve certainly made it our own, but it will never be The House in my Head. Maybe one day! … Congrats on your first party! Thanks so much for hosting!

I am definitely a window person too. I love your style! I might have to steal a few of these photos as inspiration for the new home I am designing – both in my head and in real life! Thanks for posting the party too!

It’s funny, I was just thinking about what my dream home would look like yesterday and the exterior of the house looked very much like your dream home. We have neighbors who are selling their home right now and the exterior of their home is a gray version of that house. (The inside is absolutely spectacular too.)

Hi Diane, I can’t link, as I don’t have a blog, but my style definitely includes books–lots of books! I especially enjoy old children’s books, but vintage books are part of who I am. When I saw your stack of books, I immediately went to my library site to see if I could order any of them. The only one I could find was the Alexandra Stoddard book on the right, “Living a Beautiful Life.” I love her work! Can you tell me the author(s) of the middle two books? Are those by Stoddard, also?

As far as my style, I would describe it as Cottage Garden. I love flowers, God’s creation, and old-fashioned vintage things. I love pansies, too, with their sweet faces, and have a collection of pansy (and other purple flower) paintings, pictures, and hand-painted porcelain .

I love the girls on the swing. They remind me of my daughters long ago.

Finally, I understand about being in limbo, but want to encourage you to truly live where you are. I know you may not want to (or be able to) make a lot of changes in your home right now, but I want to encourage you to continue to do what you can. Anything you do will only increase the value of your home. You have a beautiful style, and are sooo creative! Even in limbo, you can continue to enjoy the “simple pleasures in life,” and I think you really do. I guess what I’m trying to say is, just don’t let “being in limbo” define who you are.

Blessings,
Marilyn

Thanks Marilyn-

I am trying pretty hard to stay upbeat, but some days it can get a little old. My husband and I are positive people and know it is just temporary. I am looking forward to all that I will be able to do once he gets re-employed. Your style sounds very cheery and cozy.

The books: The blue one is another one by Dorothy Rodgers called- My Favorite Things. The brown one is Alexandra Stoddard’s first book – Style for Living. Her very best book and even she admits put her on the map is Living a Beautiful Life which was her third book. That one is still in print – it is a classic.

I like most of what you like. Easy! Windows, White Trim, Big Porch. We are in our forever house so it’s up to me to create an updated light-colored farm house style out of this awkward & dark saltbox! Link is project #1 and we have many more!

Just came across your blog, and I have to say–I love your style! For me, views (and large windows) are essential…and lots of sunlight!

What a beautiful website/blog this is! I wondered if anyone could tell me about Alexandra Stoddard’s books. I have several, but haven’t seen Style for Living, which is out of print but still available here and there, apparently. How does it differ from Living a Beautiful Life? I wonder if it’s worth my looking for it. Thank you in advance! Best wishes, Deborah
