Cozy Throw Blankets For All Seasons

How to make a throw blanket and where to buy them to so that you can add color and texture to a room by draping them over a sofa, chair or bed.

As I was sitting alone in the comfort of the AC masking off the staircase around each baluster with nothing else but my thoughts to keep me amused, I started to think about fall and all that is ahead. If you don’t know this from reading my blog….  I LOVE Fall. It is my favorite season.

Pretty soon the AC will be off and you will find me enjoying a crisp fall breeze blowing into the house.

When we first looked at our house last fall with the real estate agent, it was such a day. The breeze was gently blowing through the house, the leaves were vibrant all around the lake. I knew I found home.

Outdoor Living room

Since I sort of missed enjoying fall last year with all that we had to do to move to SC, I am planning to make the most of it this year. Sitting out on the deck, gazing at the lake in one of my rockers with a hoodie and throw blanket… and of course a cup of hot tea.

Now that fall will be here soon I want to begin to warm the room up. I have drapes to still finish making and hang, as well as adding some cozy texture to the room.

Black and white check throw blanket

One of the ways I like to warm up a room is by placing a throw blanket across the back or arm of a chair or sofa. I love how they warm up a space while pulling a color scheme together. I have many. If I have an extra I place it in big floor basket in the room for easy retrieval when needed.

There will never be a shortage of throw blankets at the Henkler Hacienda. :-) I like to mix and match them. I like using them better than throw pillows since they don’t get in the way as much as pillows do.

I buy most of them at places like HomeGoods and Walmart.

I have even made a few. One I made was a summer weight throw that I made with a remnant of fabric. Summer throws are needed when the AC starts to feel too chilly especially when you are relaxing reading or watching a movie on TV. Kitty cats love to curl up on them no matter what season they are for.

How to make a pom pom fall throw blanket

This throw blanket I semi-made. I bought a plain-edged fuchsia fur throw then added my own style to in the way of large pom poms. I called it my Mondo Pom Pom Throw.

It is heavier, perfect for snuggling under on a crisp fall day as well as in the winter to cozy up with by the fire.

I like to place a throw blanket in each bedroom. This was the guest room in my previous house…

For maximum comfy-cozy factor, I found I like the fur throws. This one was my favorite, until…

… I bought this faux fur throw blanket. It is the one my family fights over to use when watching TV or reading. It’s soft, warm and weighted just right. It will be hard to find one better than this.

Do you collect throw blankets?  Do you neatly fold your throw blankets over the back of a chair or its arm or do you casually throw it over so it drapes in soft folds?

Diane, your house is beautiful. I love the paint clean up tips and boy do I need them. The tip about punching a drip hole in the paint can is brilliant!

I know that you love the leopard… I do as well, it’s classic. I’m guessing you might choose that blanket, although they are all adorable.

    Keep up the great work.
PS, One of your previous posts about painting your garage entry inspired me to do the same.

I’m new at blogging too, so not sure if my link will work.
    Best regards,

Hi Sue – Thanks for the nice note. I do love the leopard, in fact I love all the throws I found. I narrowed it down to two and then could not decide so I bought both, knowing they will get good use.

Oh my goodness you are working hard on that staircase – it will be a stunner when you are done. I love changing up my throws for the different seasons and pick them up whenever I see cute ones at HomeGoods or TJ Maxx. Gosh, which one did you pick up … I’m torn between #3 and #5 – so different and chic in their own way : )

  3. #2!!! Love those Pom poms!!!! I can’t wait to see the big reveal of the staircase!! What a job!!!!!
I love throws too! I have quite a stash!
I’m going to order 2 Orange/ white ones for the fall today!
Happy painting! Love seeing your Lakehouse!!

  4. Hey Diane,
I’m going out on a limb and picking #8 mostly because you have the matching shoes. LOL

Last fall I made 3 fleece “tie” blankets and I love them. They are so easy to make, very inexpensive, and very warm.

Thank goodness our weather has finally taken a turn. Today was in the lower 80’s with very humidity. It felt fabulous. Hope you are having some cooler days also. Vikki in VA

    I guess #4…
I love the idea of the throws…I myself like mine neatly folded over a couch or chair when not in use.
Throws can be changed out for every season or occasion so quickly and can really pull a room together!
Looking forward to your finished staircase!

I’m thinking you bought #5… (second guess would be one from the #1 group)

As a Univ. of Alabama fan, I’d naturally have to pick the black and white hounds-tooth check of #4.

I’m laughing at the Sept. 22 comment regarding the fall season. Most of us living in the South never feel a real ‘fall’ day until closer to the end of October. Maybe SC is much different than Alabama, but my AC runs through September and into October (at least during the day).

Looking forward to seeing the finished product on those stair.

  7. Mary Heicher says:

My guess on which throw you bought would be #7. I love the colors in that one myself :)
I have throws everywhere. I drape over the arm chairs, and center one on the back of the sofa.
Can’t wait to see the finished stair case.

  8. Melissa Leach says:

The staircase is going to be beautiful! We have a couple of throws and it seems our two Shih Tzu’s have taken ownership of them. I love the pom pom throws :)

To make house perfect sometimes you need to add few cheap details and that’s it. You certainly know how to add that specific detail to upgrade your house. Great choice of blankets. Thanks for sharing Diane

I like your style of Decor very much simple and beautiful,I think your stairs is great as is it fits in beautifully with your furniture,I painted mine in a previous house and was so sorry natural wood is my preference, not yours. The throws are lovely perhaps the pom pom would be your choice.Thank you for the great ideas.

  11. I’m thinking you went with 7 or 9 for your new fall throw. Although I am drawn to number 6! I do not knit or crochet, but love handmade throws! I picked one up at the local Goodwill last year. It washed up really nice. When my son and his girlfriend were in the process of moving this past winter, we had the pleasure of babysitting their two cats. At night when I would cozy up under the colorful hand crocheted throw, the more shy of the two cats would jump up on the throw, paw around and settle comfortably on the throw on my lap. Here’s to cooler weather, throws and cats! LOL

  12. I’m thinking #6 or #7 was your pick.

  13. lindalw666 says:

I like those under 5,7, and 9! But they’re all good – and poms… who doesn’t love a softy pom or two on a throw?

  14. I think it depends on where you plan to mostly use the throw, and whether or not you limited yourself to just one…. but my first choice was number 7, but I think you might’ve gone with number 4, also. Looking forward to your Fall reveal!

  15. Elisabeth says:

    Hi Diane,
I just wanted to say how much I love your blog. I love the fact you do your own thing and are not dictated to by fleeting fashions and trends, or what famous bloggers have in their homes. Your home is just beautiful! I sincerely love it. Thank you so much for sharing all you’ve learned along the way. I am always smiling when I see your newest blog post appear in my inbox. It always brings joy.
    Thanks again,
    Elisabeth (Australia).

After reading your blog for some time now, I know you like color, so I think you choose #7. It has all of the classic fall colors and would look amazing against white furniture.

As for my house, I’m in a Lapio development here in Hatfield so we freeze 3 of the 4 seasons, and sweat to death upstairs during the other one. I am actually thankful for bitter cold days because my heat pump actually puts out heat those days?

I’m patiently waiting to see your stair makeover; and you have inspired me to tackle painting our stained woodwork in the future. Best of luck this week!

  17. Katharine says:

I think you bought #4. Glad you are enjoying your new home.

  18. Laura at Duke manor farm says:

Yeah…get back to work. That’ shag throw looks pretty darn cozy

  19. The Woven Cotton Throw in gold would be perfect for my family room…I’ve been looking for a throw in this shade for some time now. I also love the Houndstooth Throw in black – I think it would look good just about anywhere. Did you choose the Throw With Colorful Fringe? I’m not sure on it being the one you would choose, but you love green and that one is just so fun and cheerful…I myself am quite drawn to it. I throw mine over the furniture sometimes and fold and drape them other times. LOL – guess it depends on my mood and how I’m styling the rest of the room.
