Ahhhh… that crisp fall air has arrived and it felt so nice until sadly it didn’t. :-(

We turned the AC in the house off a few days ago and opened up the windows to let the crisp fall air in, but this year after the hurricane damage and so many trees down and tree debris around the area, many homeowners are burning it which I find an awful practice since I suffer from nasal allergies.

The smoke in the air is even impacting my daily walk. Double sad face. :-( :-(

I have to keep the windows closed which makes me feel anxious as I just want the fresh air through the house. Do any of you have nasal allergies to burning wood?

I will be a happy camper once the area gets past hurricane cleanup mode.

On a positive note, repairs on the house are moving in the right direction. If you missed what Hurricane Helene did to my house, you can read about it, here.

The first thing will be getting a whole new roof all over the house, not just repaired. We found a great roofer who can start work in a few weeks instead of months as some of the roofer estimates we got were going to take to start.

Lots to do and plan, so many choices. So Ed and I don’t get overwhelmed, we are taking it all one step at a time.

Now onto the links and ideas I found this week.

  1. It’s good you are taking your home repairs one step at a time, it could be overwhelming. It will be helpful to see progress being made. I hope the irritating smoke subsides soon so you can go outdoors and breathe again! We went through this a few years ago, closing all windows and staying indoors due to toxic smoke from wildfires that engulfed industrial areas. It lasted several days and I felt claustrophobic in my home. What a relief to finally open a window again. Hang in there!

  2. When you wrote about not having something in your home AND not missing it for 30 years, my mind went directly to trash compactor! Very surprised to see that you were referring to a formal living room. I haven’t had a formal living room for 20 years, but I would welcome the square footage now & use it as an unfurnished open space that morphed into whatever was required. Especially as a space to play virtual reality games and programs!

  3. I had a neighbor who burned poison ivy with other brush from his yard. I am sure he thought nothing of it but I am highly allergic to poison ivy and in no time my face and eyes were totally irritated. I had to go to a medical treatment center because I couldn’t open my eyes!

  4. I have to second what Sue said about smoke in general irritating allergies but burning anything from a home build is terrible. No one should breath burning plastic and other materials. And I scrolled through the article on ‘living rooms’ and if we live long enough we will see the trend swing back to separate living rooms. Just like the ‘new’ embrace of beige. And the matchy-matchy look of styling a mantel and table lamps. It all swings back.
I will never go back to carpet in my homes and the next house I’m giving up hardwood floors too. Live and learn.

  5. Sue Osborne says:

Smoke from any source can be irritating, and smoke from burning house hold items and trash can be deadly. It is full of particles from plastics and metals. Here in Upstate/central NY we get dangerous particle laden smoke from Canadian wildfires. Wear a medical mask, just like we did during the Covid pandemic, to protect your nose, throat and lungs. Shower and wash your hair if you are outside for more than a few minutes.
