Style Scouting: Vol. 244

Thanks for stopping by for this week’s Style Scouting. My Sunday post where I share the random stuff that captured my attention or inspired me that I found online.

Happy June 1st.

This past week I did something very exciting. Something that I should have done weeks ago after pollen season was over. I did some deep-dive spring cleaning. I know exciting, right? :-)

It was something that had to be done – long overdue, but more importantly I wanted the windows in my house to look summery like the windows in the photo above.

I started by removing the screens from the windows in the house and took them outside to give each one a good soapy scrub with a scrub brush and hosing off. I clean the glass on the windows and sliding glass doors all the time, but the screens just get a dusting or a going over with the nozzle of the vacuum hose.

It wasn’t a fun job and one that I didn’t think would make a decorative difference, but I was happily rewarded for my efforts when I placed each screen back in the windows and saw what a difference cleaning them made.

If your window screens haven’t been cleaned in awhile, I highly recommend taking the time and effort to get them cleaned.

Now I have to do the screen doors… slow and steady will get them all done before the first day of summer arrives. :-)

If you like white beans, this 15-minute side dish looks so good. I think I would make it my whole meal, minus the cream and oil. I would replace these in the recipe with low salt vegetable broth. (open in same tab)

  1. Hi Diane. I’m wondering if you still garden using your raised beds. Just curious! :)

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Kirsten – Last September when Hurricane Helene came blowing through our yard and brought trees down and big branches, sadly the elevated garden boxes we had been using the past few years were badly damaged and couldn’t be repaired. This summer will be the first year for us without a veggie garden. I do still grow herbs in barrels though. :-)

  2. Rage baiting is off the table for me. Thanks for cluing me in.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

You are welcome PJ – I knew a little bit about the practice of Rage Baiting, but learned alot myself in the post about it.

  3. Ordered the hair brush. I’m a fan of Denman. They never wear out.

Sigh! In other news I am not a fan of substacks. Just venting.🤔

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Karen – I just love the Denman brush and the size. I so happy with it. :- ). I agree with you about not being a fan of Substack. So many bloggers are turning to the paid platforms to get away from Google. Google in the past year has taken away most of the traffic bloggers used to get and has turned their Search feature into Ai mode that will in time not send any traffic at all to bloggers anymore.

  4. Another great post, Diane. I especially liked the fenced garden as I want to have flowers and homegrown veggies without sharing with the deer and rabbits.
My manicurist quit so now I’m on the hunt for a new place to go. I usually get a pedicure but treat myself to a manicure about once a year.
Rage Bait is the reason why I quit social media.
Thank you for all the great info!
    Have a great week.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Patti – I have never been a fan of social media and with each passing month, I scroll through it less and less. I hope you have a wonderful first week of June.

  5. Thanks for a perfect post for June 1 – so much interesting stuff as we head into summer! Netflix has so much I am often unaware of the latest and greatest – I will definitely watch Sirens tonight. I always get paper receipts – no more! I like the idea of Mussel Bound, but I’m not sure I’m handy enough to try it. Rage Bait – I hadn’t heard of this but I know exactly what it is. I definitely need to revisit Ina Garten in preparation for summer. Thanks Diane!

Thanks for reading Linda – Enjoy the week ahead.

  6. Hi, Diane.

Thank you, Diane, for this week’s links. I never skip them. I, too, read Kristi Linauer’s post on rage bait this past week and finally understood why there is so much silly garbage online. Thank you for broadcasting that info. I also appreciated the link to Modern Homemaking and have subscribed to their newsletter. I am fortunate to have grown up at a time when young girls were taught how to sew and when my un-trendy parents had a garden and chickens so we learned how to cook from scratch with fresh vegetables and eggs (and yes, some of those chickens, too). I’m also glad that you are spreading the word about paper receipts. I knew they were hormone disruptors and I try to minimize contact, so this was a good reminder. Thank you for passing along info on the differences between all my favorite frozen desserts. May we all have an Ida-like summer!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Barbara – Thanks for reading and enjoying the links in my post. I,like you grew up being taught how to cook, sew and garden and have hobbies. I fondly remember embroidering stuff and framing a few to hang in my room. I am going to try my hardest to have an Ina like summer or at least a slow going and relaxing one. Hope you get the time to fully enjoy this first week of June.
