Thanks for stopping by for this week’s Style Scouting. My Sunday post where I share the random stuff that captured my attention or inspired me that I found online.

Happy Sunday – I hope all is going well for you on this fine October morning, afternoon or evening – whenever it is that you are reading this.

This past week I have been getting exterior door replacement quotes. Over the summer Ed and I noticed that the glass in the Pella sliding glass doors in the kitchen and living room in our house have become quite foggy with age. Especially the door in the living room. Since moving into the house 10 years ago they have always been a bit foggy which is normal for their age as they are the original doors from when the house was built in 1974.

We always knew they would need replacing one day. I was hoping that just the glass could be replaced, like we had done on the two glass panels that frame the front entry door of the house.

I have had 3 estimates so far to get these doors replaced and while we were getting the estimates done we might as well replace the same style and size 3-door slider in the multi-purpose room that used to be my studioffice.

I had no idea just how expensive it would be to get the three doors replaced. $30,000 to $75,000 to replace the 3. The big difference in price is how well the doors are bulit and if they have custom features like having white interior and the exterior to match the color of the house.

I have a list of window and door companies and will get more estimates from all of them before deciding who to go with.

So now that I am in waiting mode, I have a question for you. Have you had sliding glass doors replaced with new ones in your home? If so, what company did you use and were you happy with the new doors?

Now onto the links I found for you this week.

We replaced all our windows and doors before a remodel and the doors were the most money. We used Pella windows. We switched from French doors off the deck to a sliding door. Very happy with our decision.

    1. Hi Heidi – Thank you for taking the time to tell me about your experience with getting new exterior doors. Today a Pella rep came to the house to give me a quote. They had color combo – white inside and clan in tan exterior that matches the paint color of the house perfectly and they came in 10,000 less than Anderson. I thought Pella would be the most expensive. I have one more company coming tomorrow to give a quote and then I will have to decide who to go with.

  2. We were trying to economize when we remodeled our 1894 home and went with wood windows from Home Depot (it was a huge savings), but oh boy are they the biggest regret in our home. I guess it’s a lesson in you get what you pay for. :(

    1. Hi Mary – Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me about your experience with wood windows from Home Depot. This is good to know. Sorry to hear that you regretted your decision. I don’t think I am going to be getting a quote from them or Lowes.

  3. Marianne A. says:

We have a Marvin sliding door in this house and it is awesome. Slides beautifully. We had an Anderson slider in our old house and it was a bear to slide open and closed. My mom has the same problem with her Anderson slider.

    1. Hi Marianne – Thanks for taking the time to tell me about your sliding doors from Marvin. I contacted the local Marvin dealer near me, but haven’t heard back to set up a time yet for a quote. They are the last company I will be getting a quote from and then I will make my decision. It is good to know about the Anderson slider being hard to close and open. They were the company so far that came in the highest. I don’t think I will be going with them. I am eager to see what Marvin has and their quote. :-)

I don’t live in SC so cannot help you with recommendations. We did replace sliding glass doors with French doors several years ago in a redo of a sun room. I don’t know if that is a cheaper option or something you would want.

    1. Hi Jennifer – I didn’t know if French Doors are less expensive than sliders so I asked the Pella rep you was at my house today. He said sliders are less expensive. I also wouldn’t be able to use French Doors because the rooms are not large and the door swing out would block furnishings.

  5. Sandra C. Belanger says:

Going through the same ordeal and lining up estimates with reputable dealers. Am replacing two sets of gliding doors with french doors (much cheaper) and love the look!

On the long windows, they want $2000 per unit and even for a tiny transom window the same price $2000. You will never get back your investment when you sell, contrary to what they tell you! GOOD LUCK!

    1. Hi Sandra – Thanks for taking the time to tell me about replacing your gliding doors with French Doors. I do like the look of French Doors and had them in my previous home. Thats crazy that a tiny transom would cost as much as a larger unit. I hope you get a great quote and can get what you want for a good price.

  6. We haven’t had doors replaced, but recently we had all our windows replaced. We used Renewal by Andersen and were extremely happy with the company: salesman, installers and the windows. The cost was 2/3 of the price of building the house 24 years ago! OUCH!! Our doors will have to be replaced “some day” and we’ll most likely go with them again. The windows are great and we’ve felt a difference in how much cooler the house has been over the summer.

    1. Hi Luana – Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me about using Renewal by Andersen to replace your windows. There local rep was here and I liked everything about the company and doors, but so far they are the most expensive and even more than Pella. OUCH! is right.I have two more companies coming and then I will have to make my decision. Once I do, I will post about the new doors.

  7. We live in Western Massachusetts and used Window World. There should be a Window World of the Midlands close by. We have used this company for doors and windows, siding and garage doors. They also guarantee their products.
    Always professional and courteous.

    1. Hi Lynn – Thanks for telling me about your experience with Window World. Window World was the first company I got a quote from. The only reason I don’t think I will go with them is that they didn’t offer a slider that is white on the inside and clad to match the house exterior color on the outside. :-( The rep was great – very professional and courteous though. :-)

  8. I don’t know much about doors, but what about replacing the older sliding ones with French doors? Maybe you could find some on fb marketplace.

    1. Hi Holly – Thanks for your idea. It is a good one. I like French Doors, but the rooms are not huge and the door swing-out on a French Door would take up too much precious floor space to open and close. Sliders don’t take up any, so sliders it has to be. :-)

  9. Janette Deans says:

Great post, so many interesting things, I so love browsing other peoples homes.
I have had a few windows replaced, I mean just the glass, no way am I paying thousands for doors when mine are still in good nick. Obviously I am UK based so no use to you, but I wouldn’t ever spend so much money if my doors were still good. I hope this helps alittle. xx

    1. Hi Janette – Yes your comment helped a little. It is always good to hear what others have done and are happy with. :-) It would be wonderful if they would just replace the glass, but as the rep who was at my house today showed me, the doors are old in general and are not great at keeping out the cold or heat anymore and don’t glide well, plus a few other problems that I have simply gotten used to living with. Once I decide what we are going to do, I will share in a post.
