Finding Fall Home Tour

Come fall, I am always ready, ready to decorate the house!  It is my favorite time of year. It is the season that brings life back inside and for celebrating the cozy comforts of home that nurture, inspire, and envelope us.

I like to enjoy every second and not miss anything… the chill in the air that requires you to grab a hoodie before you leave the house, football games, pumpkins ( big orange ones), mums, and especially that nesting feeling that comes along when the calendar page turns to Autumn.

I used mostly what I had to decorate since I didn’t want anything new that would soon have to be packed into a box. Instead I went to my yard to get the last of the hydrangeas. I massed them into a Costco size jar I turned into a vase.

I made the coffee table this summer by repurposing an old mirror.

To warm it up for the season, I placed an empty gold frame on top and then set the flowers and books inside it.  It looks like a big tray.

I made the leopard pillow covers to add a bit of chic to the mix. I love leopard and this fabric has a soft brushed feel that feels as good as it looks.

This is the view I get of my family room when I am sitting at my desk. I love the light bright openness and pops of color.

The leopard fabric is called Jamil from Lewis and Sheron Textiles. The fuchsia velvet is from Sy Fabrics.

My mom made this ceramic pumpkin when I was growing up. The antler is a Christmas ornament from Pier One. I removed the hook to use it as a table decoration.

It always gets a choice spot every fall.

On the side table I poured a layer of dried berries on a square plate and then placed a candle in the middle.

I can never have too many candles. This double wicked one is from HomeGoods.

One of my absolute favorite things about fall is knowing that Spiced Wafers hit the supermarket shelves.

There is nothing as delish on a crisp autumn day as to come home to find an orange box of Spiced Wafers in the pantry to dip or dunk into hot tea or coffee.

They are one very crisp cookie…a Philadelphia original made with ginger and molasses, perfect for dunking.  Yum!

I made the oak leaf fabric pillow using two dishtowels. No-sew tutorial coming soon. :-)

Fall Decorating ideas on a budget

Another reason I didn’t have time to get more decorating done this year is that I have been sidelined by an ankle injury.

While sitting on the sofa with my foot on a pillow, I got the idea to have some fun and use chalk markers in fall colors on the mirror of the coffee table.

Chalk Markers come in many colors. When you tire of your art or words, the ink wipes right off with water and a paper towel.

I used the quote from the stack of books I posted about in my Fall Home Tour last year to go around the table.

We have a gas fireplace, but these birch logs add just the right color and texture for my home’s color scheme and style.

Purple asters are one of my fall faves. I love the way the color pairs with orange.

I hope you enjoyed seeing how I decorated my family room.

  1. Hi Diane
I am a bit jealous of you. Because you live in four season country I guess.
I live in tropical island called Bali. Hot and steamy all year around.
Windows, doors are always open around the clock.
When I look at your gorgeous ideas it makes me feel live a country where we can live Autumn, Spring and Winter.
We have the fabrics and baskets almost every corner of Bali with very affordable price.
I would love to apply few ideas of yours and send you picture and you can tell me how I did go. LOL.
Thanks Diane for sharing these gorgeous ideas with your readers.

    Cheers.

So sorry that I’m only catching up now. Love love love the colors you used. The pink and leopard is a showstopper!

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Julia – thanks. I bought the fabric over the summer and still have more. In my next house…you may be seeing more of it. :-)

  4. Lianna@theresnoplacelikehomemke says:

oooo I like the berries on the plate with candle! cute idea!

  5. I love your family room and your touches of fall color. I know you like white, and it looks great, but what about a farm family like ours who is constantly carrying in dirt. Do you have a color for slip covers that you would recommend? Any decorating ideas?

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Michelle – How about using denim, chambray, or a plaid that would hide the dirt. When I wrote my book, Instant Decorating, I made 3 slipcovers. One was chambray that looked like jeans. It hid a lot of the dirt. Toss a few colorful throw blankets over your seating and use them to add some color and contrast to the seating. They also can be used to spread out in the seating to keep the slipcovers from getting too dirty. For your floors, I would try to replace wall to wall carpeting with vinyl that looks like hardwood. It is inexpensive, looks great and super easy to maintain and clean. Use easy to clean area rugs for color.

Diane!!!! It is gorgeous! Your style has always captivated me and this home tour is no exception… well done!

  7. I have been on the hunt for leopard fabric for pillows. Is the fabric velveteen? Have some sort of texture? I can’t tell from the fabric website … might have to order a swatch.
And yes, loved your fall touches.

    1. Diane Henkler says:

Hi Patricia – The fabric has a slight velvet finish, but is not velvet. There is a nap with a subtle soft texture. I think you will like it. Ordering a swatch is the best way to go if you are not sure.

Can we come over and have tea with you in that gorgeous corner? LOVE it all, as always, Diane! Let’s catch up soon! MISS your face!

  9. I simply cannot understand why HGTV has not snatched up your talented self. You need your own show, your own magazine….you are a lifestyle guru. If you had athe right PR people you would be on your way. You are the bright and colorful to Martha’s vanilla. I’ve never understood Martha’s popularity to be honest. She’s a bore who plays it too safe, you my dear have no fear, you dream, you dare, you inspire. Get out there and promote the heck out of yourself girl. You have talent and creativity in SPADES, like Elvis did. Talent oozed out of Elvis and it oozed out of YOU! I just finished reading a book by my idol, John Wooden so I’m all about giving pep talks LOL. You go girl…you’ve taken the shot, now DUNK IT!

  10. Julie Blanner says:

I am head over heels in love with the gold antler {ornament!} What a beautiful use of it. And nothing is more beautiful than something made by your mother. I hope you’re enjoying a beautiful fall so far!

  11. Beautiful! I’m wondering about your slip covers–did you make them or were they a purchase? I have an oversized easy chair from my cabin that I’ve moved home, it’s super comfy but the fabric doesn’t work with the decor.
Any tutorial or source would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  12. Krista @ the happy housie says:

I love it Diane – so fresh and crisp but perfect for Fall with the beautiful hits of colour. You are seriously making me want to paint my living room walls all white!! Can’t wait to get in on the hashtag fun!

  13. AMAZING!!! Diane everything looks fabulous! I think my most favorite though was the dried berries and candle. So lovely!

  14. Gorgeous gorgeous Diane! And those berries…and hydrangeas… and the leopard! I am loving that! Happy to be on the tour with you today!

  15. The purple flowers aren’t quite in focus, but aren’t they asters—not chrysanthemums?

  16. Your home looks lovely but seeing a television as the focal point on your mantle is a bit of a let down. I guess I’m just not a TV fan.

  17. Your house is beautiful, love the way you put accessories together. Many inspirations :) Thanks for sharing.

  18. Connie Nikiforoff Designs says:

Gorgeous! I too have those same purple towels with leaves you made into a pillow. I used it for a table runner :-) It’s great color and pattern.

I’m especially glad to see you’ve staged your home with your own style. I mean after all, when a house is lived in and it’s as beautiful as yours is, I’d rather see that than something rather non-descript when touring homes for sale. (With our home too on the market, and still being lived-in, I too have staged in my own style.) :-D

Lovely work as always Diane! Best wishes on your sale.

  19. Michael Wurm Jr. says:

Leopard and hot pink!? Count. me. in!!! Oh, Diane. You know I love you and your style. This is just great. I just want to come over for coffee and chat and chat and chat. Hope you are well! :)

    xo Michael
