Creative Ideas to Start Preparing for The Gift Giving Season

Creative Christmas gift ideas that you can make, buy or semi-DIY.

It’s the end of October. YES! The holiday season is here.

I have a question for you… What if you could start the month of December with all your holiday gifts made or bought, wrapped and ready. Shopping done and the only thing left on your “holiday prep to-do list” was to enjoy the season.

This year, I am going to make this happen….

Doing so will allow for the holiday season to be calm and filled with more meaning and joy and this year… all while staying cozy at home. More time to sit and watch my favorite Christmas movies, bake goodies and relax by the fire while listening to Christmas music.

To make this happen, I already started making, ordering and wrapping gifts for my family and friends.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned in a post that I had read that the holiday season this year will most likely be unlike any other year. The article I read noted that the time to buy gifts is now as the closer it gets to the holidays, items you may be thinking about buying are going to be sold out.

I thought I would share a few creative DIY gift ideas as well as a few ideas on where to buy unique handmade gifts for the people on your Christmas gift-giving list.

Semi-DIY Gifts

Do you remember when you were a kid doing paint by numbers art?

There is a company called, Winnie’s Picks that makes a paint-by-number canvas from a photo you send them.

Custom Paint by numbers kit and contents

They then send you the canvas printed with the paint-by-number outline for you to paint. It comes complete with all the paints and brushes that you need.

Paint by numbers mounted on foam core to make painting it easier.

I started painting one using a photo I took of one of the large Roman numeral clocks at the Musée d’Orsay when we were in Paris last year.

I taped it to a piece of dollar store foam board so I can work on it when watching TV or sitting outside.

I am making it a gift from me to me. :-) I will share the finished art in a future post along with where I plan to hang it.

  1. Wow!! The paint by numbers idea is neat and totally unique ?. Great post!

  2. Thanks for sharing your gift ideas.

I have a question about your canvas in the paint by numbers set. How do you plan to mount or frame it after you paint it? I don’t relish the idea of trying to DIY stretch it onto a frame, nor do I want to pay a fortune to have it pro mounted for framing. What are your thoughts about this?

When I was younger, paint by number kits came on canvas board. You could then just pop it into a frame. Nowadays seems like everything comes on a rolled up canvas or paper. Couple years ago I was disappointed with a kit I got from a bookseller where it ended up it did not come with all the paint colors…you had to keep mixing colors yourself to get different shades. That is a deal breaker for me as a non-artist :)

      Hi Michelle –

To mount or frame my paint by numbers canvas? I plan to frame it in a thin black frame and not use the glass. When I get it completed I will be posting about it.

With the Winnie’s Picks canvas – all the colors are numbered – mixed and ready. I could not imagine having to mix colors yourself. That would be a deal breaker for sure.

  3. These are great ideas, and I need to get a jump on it since it always sneaks up so quickly! I am inspired to get creative. Thanks so much for your great posts!

  4. Hi Diane,
Is this your first PBN from Winnie’s Picks? I‘m just wondering how long it took you to get your canvas after you ordered it. I’ve been doing PBNs since last winter and have found some companies ship their orders from China and it takes forever (over 5 months) to arrive. It has gotten better lately, but on average, it usually takes about 3 weeks to receive a stock order. I haven’t ordered from Winnie’s Picks but have often wondered if custom orders take longer to receive?
Once you start painting I guarantee you’ll be hooked on your new hobby!

      Hi Mary –

Yes this is my first time using a Winnie’s Picks canvas. It did take some time to get – about 3 weeks. I am so used to ordering things on Amazon that show up the next day. :-) I would forget all about an order that took 5 months.

Hello. I admire your Holiday spirit! Where I live (in Canada) we’re in a “red” zone, meaning we cannot see people who do not live with us. And I don’t even know if we will be allowed to see even 1 or 2 people at Christmas time. Well, I can still make gifts and leave them on my family’s balcony or porch along with goodies and Holiday cookies…
One thing I know is that we will trim a Christmas tree as this should be the last Christmas we spend there before we put the house for sale (the house is too big now).
Thank you for inspiring me. And keep the spirit!
