Lake House exterior paint colors

Style at Home

While I am enjoying taking some time off, I came upon this photo of a lake house. I have been collecting inspiration photos of house exteriors to come up with a color scheme for my house that I want to eventually paint. This one is my favorite.

exterior house color scheme

Here is my house before it was painted and shutters added. It doesn’t have any white trim and I think that is what I miss. I like white trim on a house. It makes the architectural features, pop! The siding, gutters, and the trim on my house are all painted the same color.

The colors fit well in the lakeside setting, but I want to add more interest. I am thinking of adding shutters to the upper doors. Probably in the same color as the railing.

This exterior color scheme of this house is very similar to mine. The cedar shakes add an old and rustic appeal. I love the metal roof. Funny thing, this house is in South Carolina, too.

I didn’t keep the green color. Instead I painted the house a khaki color.

You can see all the details and what I ended up doing to the exterior of the house.

I also…

…finished reading, Paris Letters

Paris Letters

I really enjoyed it and just started the author’s new book. A Year in Paris.

A Year in Paris book

It is a different kind of read from the first, but as I read, I learned more and more about the City of Light that I never knew.

If you find you like her art as much as I do, you can see it here, It’s affordable!

It is summer. Do you have a bucket list of travel destinations?  I do, I look forward to going, here  someday. Have you been?

Could you Do This? I think maybe by myself I could, but not sure about doing it with children?

Do you get enough of this? I have been feeling Number 14 on this list a lot lately.

If you like this Friday Link Love style of post, you can read more. I call them Style Scouting now. These posts are where I share ideas and decorating and lifestyle inspiration I find.

  1. I like the idea of white trim. My suggestion would be to look for houses that have a brick color that is similar to what you have, unless you are willing to paint your brick. I think the second picture shows how different a paint can look when paired with different brick. The darker brick really grounds the green better. Love your idea of adding shutters, though!

    1. Hi Tiffany – I know we won’t ever paint the brick. I may just end up painting the wood siding a tan color. Many of my neighbors homes are tan with white trim, brick and or stone. My house would surely fit right in if I did this. It is not a project I plan to take on this summer, but eventually will. Thanks for your suggestions.

I personally love the white trim idea! Do you have any trade schools in your area, that may be able to use your house for student’s to train on? It’s usually at a much lower cost, but can take much longer than professionals to complete the project.

    1. Hi Gail – I am going to put a call to the tech school on my to-do list. Thanks for the EXCELLENT idea.

  3. I’ve been looking at navy as well. My neighbors think I’m bonkers but…..oh well!

    1. Hi Vicky – I wouldn’t care what the neighbors think! :-) Navy is such a classic color, your home will look updated and classic.

  4. White trim would really make the features on your home stand out. And you are tackling making shutters? You certainly are ambitious. But, it will look fantastic….I do love the colors on your home though. Happy 4th! ;)

    1. Hi Donnamae – I won’t be making complex shutters, only basic ones using fencing. Very easy to make and stain.

  5. Your house will look wonderful with white trim. Your decks are already great.

  6. I love the navy house – think that color scheme would look great on your house!

    1. Hi Christy – I wish I could have it painted soon, but it will have to wait or I need to win the lottery. :-)
