If you are looking for Christmas decorating ideas that you can easily do or inspiration to spark your own holiday decorating, I thought I would recap a few of my popular Christmas decorations I have made to decorate my house.
For readers who have been with me from the beginning, it will be taking a trip down memory lane. For new readers… you will see I like lots of color and glitter when I decorate my home for Christmas.
Links to each project post/tutorial is under each photo.
Back in 2009 when I first started blogging, I liked to use the color purple to decorate at Christmastime.
I used all shades of it. For this decoration, I glued two un-related thrift store items together, spray painted them and then added lots of glitter to create an ornament bowl for a table top or sideboard.
It is not the holidays around my house without glitter on something…
…like these easy to make sparkly branches that also add a lot of impact to a room without having to spend a lot of money.
Do you enjoy scouring thrift shops for unique and affordable finds? I found these glass tree canisters for $1.00 each. I then added… you know by now…. glitter to them to use to decorate the mantel.
After years of using purple, I began to change things up by using turquoise. This colorful decor was featured in…
…the 2014 issue of BHG Christmas Ideas Magazine.
I also like to make a new tree skirt or stand cover every year. I made this one using old frames. Attaching them together to form the cover was easy with free DIY hinges.
I made this tree stand cover or tree collar by repurposing a thrift store find basket.
No DIY skills? Try this Knitting Needle Ornament Tree. It can be made in 5 minutes.
If you like to craft and have a stash of fabric or paper scraps these photo frame ornaments can be made in an afternoon.
Do you like to papercraft? I made this holly leaf garland using book pages and a free printable sheet I made of French Script. The tutorial and free printable can be found, here: Paper Holly Garland

Thanks for a wonderful idea!
Oh Lord, these Christmas decoration ideas are so beautiful!
Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. I always go crazy around these holidays. In addition to that, home decorating is what I loved the most. So I always search for different ideas to re-new my house interior. Recently, I came across Salt Lamps. They are amazing , they are incredibly versatile and can easily adapt to any style of interior. When they glow up, it shows the reflection of heaven. So beautiful! I love them! I got my salt lamp from Saltean.
I was wondering, where did you get your accent chest with the white Charlie Brown tree on top?
I have been looking for something similar, and cannot seem to find anything like it.
Love your site!!
Hi Sonya – The desk/sideboard is a hand-me-down from Ed’s uncle. It is from the 1940’s or 50’s. The top drawer opens up and drops down to create a desk. You could get something similar on Etsy or Ebay. Here is one to look at that I found on Etsy: http://bit.ly/2zT9S8N
Thank you for such great ideas. I’m new to your site and am looking forward to your Christmas decor.
I’m brand new to your blog. I love it. You are really talented. I especially like the picture frame tree skirt. Looking forward to your Christmas decor.
Great ideas! I love the idea of using a basket as a tree skirt. I think I may be doing that for my small, artificial tree this year. :)
I guess I’m old fashioned alothough all the different colors are pretty they aren’t Christmas. One year I decided to ” change things up” and used colored lights on the tree and got nothing but grief from everyone ! That summer the colored lights were put up around the pool and mom was told in no uncertain terms that the tree would have white lights! Looking forward to seeing what you have planned for this year.
That’s how I first found your blog, searching for ideas for decorating the mantle and came across your purple and green post. :) Love seeing all your holiday decorations again.
Congratulations on all you have accomplished in the past 8 years! Your blog is well written and full of inspiring ideas!
I’m curious as to what you do with the old color scheme items when you move on to another color for your holiday decorating. Do you hang on to everything knowing you will circle back to it?
Hi Tiffany – Most of my color scheme changes are ornaments and a few garlands. I do have bins of all colors of ball ornaments, but the greenery stays the same or I buy fresh each year. I do have a lot of ribbon, too. Again I store this in a bin in case I want to re-use it. This year my oldest bought a new house and will be decorating it for Christmas. I am giving her a lot of my old decorations that I know I won’t be using anymore. My youngest also wants some of it, so it makes me happy to be able to see it reused and loved. :-)
Congratulations on 8 yrs!!!!!! All your Christmas posts from past is beautiful!!!! Since I just joined following you I really enjoyed seeing all your past posts
Repurposing that Charlie Brown tree was genius!!!!

Love your ideas Diane, keep ’em coming!
Thanks for these ideas, Diane. I pinned several of them. You know, just yesterday I was wondering why I hadn’t received any posts from you, hoping you and Ed were ok.
I usually have gold & silver tree decorations, which is what my daughter likes, but my daughter moved out of the house last year and I felt this year its time for new traditions. So I donated our big old artificial tree that took hours to assemble & add lights, and I’ve ordered a cute table top tree and for the first time I’m going with a red & green theme! I’m saving the wonderful gold & silver decorations for her in the future (as soon as her cats get older & stop climbing their tree!)
Hi Holly – Oh those kitties… I have had many a tree go crashing to the floor over the years from a cat that shall go nameless. :-) One year we wired the tree to the wall so he would not keep knocking it down. Enjoy decorating your table top tree with red and green this year.
We foster and always have lots of kitties if your trees next to a wall, put a large picture hanger and fish line to secure it upright. We always have climbers and it seems to work.
Red and green for me ( only) always!
Hi DIB – I grew up in a home where red and green was always used. I enjoyed changing my colors out over the years, but nostalgia is big for me at Christmas and I really, really loved my red and white decor last year and will be building upon it this year.
